You mean the one closest to B.U.G.S.?

That used to be the camel house and held kangaroos on my visit last year.

The area marked for redevelopment is actually quite a large section of land. As already mentioned, the water saving garden area by the komodos (the site of the former stork/ 'southern' aviary) is cordoned off, with signs advertising the children's zoo redevelopment, suggesting a path or corridor along the perimeter into the existing children's zoo site. Interestingly, the old canid area, now the show animal cages, at the back of the old sealion viewing gallery, is also off limits, and although this may essential due to lack of alternative access, I would expect these animals to be incorporated into the children's zoo area, just as the seriema and vulture were housed in recent years at the end of the stables.
 
Too large I think, I'm not convinced this is the best use of space in a relatively small zoo like London...

well, let's face it, they are using an area that has for years been given over to domestic stock to create a number of small mammal exhibits, so I would argue that, if you view the name 'children's zoo' simply as a piece of marketing, ZSL are actually reclaiming most of that land back from the domestic stock that it had there. It's just a larger, more interactive version of the otter and meerkat exhibits they opened a few years ago by the clore....far better than subjecting some cows and sheep to year-round sand yards.

as well as there being an element of either coincidence or nostalgia going on in the plans to have aardvarks there again, I seem to remember an old, open-air exhibit for red pandas between the old children's zoo and the elephants, basically a circular wall surrounding a tree.
 
So many of the visitors at Regents Park are children that you can understand the thinking behind an expansion the children's zoo. They aren't taking over any areas that are used for interesting species (in my opinion, at least) and there is actually a fair amount of unused space in other areas of the gardens.

a very good comment there, its a big step towards getting children interested in exotics not just domestic ones. will there be any conservation links here?
 
All of the exhibits at ZSL are supposed to reflect their conservation activities and of course their rebranding theme....
 
am i right in saying that it looks like the old penguin enclosure will be a large fountain?
 
Yeah, looks like it. Which is actually quite a good use IMO seeing as it's very hard to find a suitable species for it now.
 
ISIS are showing a pair of aardvarks at London now, can anyone confirm this?
 
its most probably right as they are due to be in the childrens zoo, i wonder where are keeping them?

I guess they're in the off-show parts of the clore or even in the Casson...

unless i'm imagining things, I think someone posted on one of the european boards that aardvarks had been sent (i'll have a little dig around)

Jwer posted that and aardvark arrived from Burger's Zoo in Holland
 
I spect they're using the outdoor enclosure in Clore, seeing as they quarantined anteaters there before.
