I thought both the Guardian and BBC exemplified unbiased reporting. It seems I was wrong.

It seems more a case of "how do I fill my paper / my news briefing, .... twist and shout and did n't we have fun making fun of ... (and least of all what is it all about and informative investigative journalismreadable and content).

I propose that this was a news item for which at some point a special thread was opened for those willing / able to discuss euthanasia in zoo animals. This thread does not lend itself to having it discussed further.

I would like to see some real news about København zoo (for goodness sake get your spelling right for once ..:rolleyes:). And really there is ... much ado about something!!!

Firstly: These lions were eunthanised not destroyed.
Secondly: I'm sure the moderators would appreciate that if we want to debate the concept of breeding and culling we do it in this thread.

It is not a matter of feelings. They are different words with different meanings and should be used as such. Then we can debate from a constructive and reasonable perspective regardless of our personal opinions.
 
The definition of euthanasia is

"to kill (a person or animal) painlessly, esp to relieve suffering from an incurable illness"

There is no element of "relieving suffering from an incurable illness" about killing cubs. Using the term euthanasia sanitises it.

Well that does make some sense if culling as a practice is the topic.
But there is reason to discuss the choices of this specific institution and the zoo's somewhat outlier protocol for these actions. Not every zoo puts out a press release every time they cull animals

Are we entirely sure that the collection did announce this cull prior to the news agencies which are undoubtedly watching them like a hawk getting wind of it, or - as I am more inclined to believe - has the collection spoken to the press about the matter *after* the press heard about it?
 
I think that this thread probably should, in point of fact, remain open - but I have taken the liberty of renaming the thread at the same time as re-opening it, as I have noticed that all but two posts relate to 2014 events anyway!

Frankly I am amazed no one thought to post about the successful breeding of Tassie Devils in 2013 in this thread ;)
 
What happened with lions' skins & bones? Were they discarded?!
The news say that just tissue samples were used for research...
 
I read on the little Zoo news section on the right of Zoochat's main page, that Copenhagen say they are, and have always been, transparent about euthanasing their surplus stock etc and do not try to hide or cover up such practices or put any 'spin' on them. It may backfire on them in situations like Marius the Giraffe and now maybe these Lions, however it is a refreshing change from the intense secrecy most Zoos still adopt when it comes to such matters, and surrounding their husbandry practices generally.
 
Back to zoo news: After 35 years, it has been confirmed that one of the white rhino females is currently pregnant and is due in early 2015!
 
0.0.1 Reticulated Giraffe born yesterday (17th April)

The female calf born 19/5/2012 will soon be moved to a collection in Italy
