Hogle Zoo Hogle Zoo News

Anyone have an idea what sort of African animals will call the new exhibit home?
So far I've heard ostrich, zebra, giraffe, lions and nyalas.

I was there last summer (August 2013) and your list is what I was told would be there - although at the time they didn't yet know what antelope species they would have, so I can't confirm if nyala are what will be there. If that is what you have heard then maybe that is the species.

The Africa complex will have two components, a lion exhibit and a large multi-species savanna.

Woodland Park Zoo has a long and interesting story about the transportation of 2 female lions to Hogle Zoo on the link below, and there is a short video that gives a clear image of the new lion exhibit in Utah. It appears to be quite impressive, with lots of space and heated areas near the vast viewing windows. Also, nyala are mentioned in the video clip and so that species can be confirmed as part of the new African Savanna zone of the zoo. The entire area is 4.5 acres and replaces the children's zoo.

The video brings up a good point I can't ever get a solid answer to. I've seen Nyala at game auctions etc and I have been laughed at to my face when using two different pronunciations of the name. (Being from Alabama I am used to that haha). Is it Nee-yala or In-yala? The first attempt (using the Nee like she does in the video) was at Disney they told me to use In-yala. I use In-yala at a Game farm in Texas and I am told its Nee-yala again. Is the In-yala perhaps the term used in African language and Nee-yala the Americanzed version?

Wha was it at Disney that told you that pronounciation? If it was a Safari driver I would be carefull about trusting them when it comes to facts. When I did the safari ride a month back, they said that the masai was the smallest species of giraffe and that reticulated giraffes were the largest!

It wasn't a safari driver, it was one of the "educators" and they spoke with like a stereotypical "swahili" (I have no idea what proper swahili sounds like, I mean the accent from movies). The reason I believed them is I've heard it pronounced that way by several Afro-British sources as well.

I was wondering where Montgomery's SSP lions would leave when they left the AZA. They were born in the same litter with 3 sisters at Birmingham.

A video that shows most of the new African exhibit, which opened on May 30th. Based on what I saw in the video, I think it looks pretty good.

They are located immediately adjacent to the service yard and will more than likely simply be closed off.

I visited the zoo today, and posted some photos here of the new African Savanna exhibit area. The exhibit is nice, but at this time only houses zebra, ostrich, egyptian goose, and helmeted guineafowl. Due to the size of the main savanna yard, the exhibit feels very empty without the giraffes. I also wish that the main savanna yard could have contained more grass, because right now it is mostly just soil with a few planted areas hotwired off.
Some guests were complaining that they could no longer go inside the giraffe barn, as they could in the older giraffe barn.
The lion exhibit is actually larger than it appears, lots of room for two lions. (Currently the 2 males rotate with the 2 females). If the zoo plans to introduce the 4 lions together and breed them, then the exhibit seems too small in my opinion.

Thanks for the mini-review. What has happened to the old giraffe barn?

It's been turned into a maintenance area, and is closed to guests. It's at the back of the zoo and nowhere near this new area.

No Nyala? Man the Antelope really is the lost cause in Zoo Politics

They have 2 male nyala, they are just not on display yet.
