Berlin Tierpark Tierpark Berlin news

The sloths were given away, but I can't remember where they went. (I don't even quite remember if I even heard where they went in the first place). I Kind of hoped they would keep them together (if that is possible?) as I quite like sloths. But the zoo Berlin still has a pair of them. So it may be is part of the plot to get rid off redundancies between the two institutions.

Blaszkiewitz is going to step down on March 31st. Knieriem will take over on April 1.

Today the tropical hall in the Brehm-building reopened. The plants only had about a week to grow, so it will take some time. If you want to get a first Impression, check out this Video:

Also the Tierpark received 2 "swamp kangaroos" (?) German: Sumpfkängurus. They live with the grey ones.

how many species of macropods have you seen already? I'm guessing maybe two or three? Berlin should up your total significantly!

It will add a few :) though less than you would imagine.

My current life total of macropods is as follows:

Long-nosed potoroo (Potorous tridactylus)
Western woylie (Bettongia penicillata ogilbyi)
Agile wallaby (Macropus agilis)
Eastern grey kangaroo (Macropus giganteus)
Mainland Western grey kangoroo (Macropus fuliginosus melanops)
Parma wallaby (Macropus parma)
Red kangaroo (Macropus rufus)
Red-necked wallaby (Macropus rufogriseus)
Swamp wallaby (Wallabia bicolor)
Tasmanian Red-necked wallaby (Macropus rufogriseus fruticus)

My trip will give me the following new species:

Dusky pademelon (Thylogale brunii) at Magdeburg
Eastern wallaroo (Macropus robustus robustus) at Tierpark Berlin
Tammar Wallaby (Macropus eugenii) at Leipzig
Yellow-footed rock wallaby (Petrogale xanthopus xanthopus) at Tierpark Berlin.

the rock wallabies are the nicest of that lot (the pademelons are cute too).

The Tierpark received Great Bustards and 0,1 Red Pandas.

The species kept in the central hall of the Brehm-building list as follows:
Indian flying fox (Pteropus giganteus)
Blue Crowned Pigeon (Goura cristata)
Common Bronzewing (Phaps chalcoptera)
Golden-breasted Starling (Lamprotornis regius)*
Superb Starling (Lamprotornis superbus)*
Bali Myna (Leucopsar rothschildi)*
Grosbeak Starling aka Grosbeak Myna, Finch-billed Myna, or Scissor-billed Starling (Scissirostrum dubium)*
Wattled Starling (Creatophora cinerea)*
Red-winged Starling (Onychognathus morio)
Pale-legged Hornero (Furnarius leucopus)
Black Bulbul (Hypsipetes leucocephalus)*
Red-whiskered Bulbul (Pycnonotus jocosus)*
Lesser Whistling Duck (Dendrocygna javanica)
Freckled Duck (Stictonetta naevosa)*
Pink-eared Duck (Malacorhynchus membranaceus)
Hottentot Teal (Anas hottentota)*

*kept by Berlin Zoo as well

As there is still space for more name tags, I think there may well be more species sooner or later when the vegetation has grown a bit (so Knieriem wants).

wow that's a lot more than I had expected!

Although the Aussie government is loathe to allow their native wildlife out of the country, enough macropods have come to Europe in the past that there is still a decent amount of diversity - although many, many other species have disappeared from European collections of course.

These collections are an example to be followed for other collections, in the way that they have large numbers of different species of each animal group.

Given the upcoming change of directorship and the successor in office, I somehow doubt the continuity of said exemplarity...

I doubt that too … as Dr. Knieriem has publicly stated he would like to maintain the traditional integrity of both zoos as world class and zoo community steering institutions. He put particular emphasis on the park / woodland locale of Berlin Tierpark as to be cherished and conserved.

The one major difference with Dr. Blaskiewitz is that he is more a man of multiple species exhibits and biome-themes (African savannah, South-American woodland …, Asian tropics). But he has declined on the reduction in species diversity, only … that Zoo and Tierpark are complimentary meaning no more Indian rhinos in Zoo and Tierpark (meaning Indian rhinos will in future no longer be at Zoo). He has also hinted at perhaps relocating some West Berlin favorites to Tierpark Berlin to increase its appeal to the general public (orangs … et al).

So, all in all I do not see a big difference in their vision of both sites. What I will say is that I do hope they re-join EAZA as having both Berlin zoos outside the organization is a heart with a hole in it. But truthfully, I feel EAZA should really clean up its act somewhat and particularly directional wise.

@Kifaru Bwana: In most cases your sources seem to state the same like mine. But in one of the interviews I read, Knieriem clearly stated that no popular animals will be transferred from Zoo to Tierpark. So I'm not sure which statement we should believe. But I guess we will find out soon anyway.

By the way, it seems like the Tierpark will receive a new theme: "A journey through the world's continents in one day" or something like that...

Crazy, it seems like it's getting more and more likely that a large bath will be built on or near the Tierpark grounds. Monday they agreed to have a proper analysis investigating the venture (It had nothing to do with April fools day...)

As indicated above, the Tierpark indeed seems to receive a new theme. Knieriem states the biological grouping may well be given up in order to create a geographically themed parc that carries the visitors through the 5 continents (Zoo Berlin, however, is to keep the old structure). While both zoos may have to give up species the Zoo in particular is to remain a place displaying great diversity.

Other than the geographic scheme, the Tierpark also is to receive a new large playing ground and a new main entrance. Also Knieriem wonders whether he can transfer the large cats from the Brehm-building to other places in the parc (or again give them away). But he still isn't sure about any of the details. He believes it will take him till the end of the year to fully make up his mind about things.

Bye the way: The large bath is still being discussed. I'm not sure if I said anything about the details yet. It would likely open near the mountain area of the park and come along with a new third entrance into the park as well as new capacities for car (and possibly bus) parking. Also some new enclosures may come with it as some plans suggest swimmers should swim side to side with animals like penguins, seals or stuff like that...

New animal-species at Tierpark Berlin : 3 Red howler monkeys are on display in the monkey-house.

These were already in the collection, sharing an enclosure with white saki opposite the pig-tailed macaques :) having seen the monkey house, I think they were better off where they were ;)
