Adelaide Zoo Capybara babies!

Over the weekend Adelaide Zoo welcomed some new additions to the expanding zoo family. Five capybara babies were born on Saturday 19 April right in front of excited zoo visitors! It turned out to be quite the spectacle as a large crowd was treated to a rare sight, witnessing first-hand the miracle of life.

I think this is some great news, Adelaide zoo is doing well with old "phase out species" - they now have both young capybara and mara.

I saw the title of the thread and thought "Woo, more capybaras!" but then realised which part of the world it was and realised it was slightly more significant than I first thought! ;) :p

I know I've said this before, but I really enjoy Adelaide zoo because it perseveres with species regarded as "phase-outs." Likewise the smaller zoos at which I can still see some of those animals.

While I can understand the cold-blooded reasoning behind Aussie zoos having fewer species, as an average visitor I don't want to see less and less animals each time I visit. Maybe I'm being unrealistic. If so, then as far as I'm concerned, the "Golden Age" of Australian zoos has gone.....
