Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden What's Gnu at the Cincinnati Zoo - 2014

Yeah. Did they not make the cut?

Even though I did suggest that to myself when passing the zebra exhibit, they were cut from the plans after they ran out of horizontal space for the hoofstock/bird exhibit. On the outdated plans from 2012, you can see that the zoo planned on making a separate zebra exhibit in the back of the savanna. Just search for "Africa" in the gallery and go to earlier pictures to see for yourself.

I'm not sure if mixing them is okay but a few Zoochatters agreed as well that the zoo [would've] made a smart move by having the zebras separate.

The only thing I've seen them being successfully mixed with were Southern White Rhinos, though I believe that's even a gamble often times.

So what? You were suppose to view the zebras distantly? Also, why in the hell is the hippo enclosure smaller than the wild dog one!!?

It's not, this is the 2012 plans, where the crocodiles were part of it as well. From experience of actually walking into the wild dog and future hippo area, along with seeing the new map for Africa (not for guests' eyes to see), the wild dog exhibit is probably around 7,000 sq ft while the remaining space is 30,000. I have a photo of the remaining space left if you'd like to see it?

Yeah, I remember that being suggested vis the rendering of them set back, but still visible. Grévy's aren't that bad. They mix well with Masai Giraffe, at least if given acreage.

That would be nice to see them at Giraffe Ridge but the holding area only has 5 stalls with currently 5 giraffes and there will be multiple babies to come in the future.

Wonder if they sent them to the farm out in Indian Hill. They had a male there when I visited in 2010, but that was a long time ago. Maybe they'll phase them out in favor of a more tractable subspecies for Africa.

I highly doubt they're adding zebra in Africa! due to how small the hoofstock enclosure turned out.

They are not adding them.

The only species that I'm looking forward to seeing is the Kori Bustard that the zoo's website promises! There are still rumors of Giant Eland and a stork species being added. The species that are confirmed according to the zoo's website is: Lesser Kudu, Thomson's Gazelle, Crowned Cranes, and White-backed Vultures, and as I said.. the Bustards. The zoo's PDF Africa Interpretive Guide even mentions possible future Wildebeest and Guineafowl.

Cincinnati Zoo Africa Hippo Small Land Mass

Looks to be way too small. This exhibit should be at least double the size. The public area is so large, why can't it be expanded into that area. Hopefully the zoo will not hold more than a pair of hippo. Why do hippo's always get such small exhibits being the same size as rhino's?

I don't know. If they were smart they'd run it from the dog viewing and behind meetkat/fox for underwater viewing and such. They won't. Poor Hippos will be locked away for months on end in holding. :(

Based on those photos it seems the Meerkat enclosure is almost the same size! And the wild dog might even be larger!

Its recommended now that zoos build exhibits to house 4-8 hippos instead of pairs or threesomes. This looks like it would be too small for that.
