Recent books that could/should be of interest to folks on this forum are - Int.Zoo Yearbook Vol 48,"London Zoo and the Victorians" by Takashi Ito,"Riverbanks Zoo and Garden-Forty Wild Years" Krantz and Jacobs.Im not going to go into detail as that kind of info is readily available on the internet, suffice it to say that all are worthy additions to any serious collection. So far not a great year for non-zoo zoology books but I quite liked "Hummingbirds-A Lifesize Guide To Every Species"[Fogden,Taylor,Williamson]...except for the fact that every species isn't illustrated-in lifesize or not!

intrigued by this I had a google and found a Birdforum thread with a link to this unimpressed review: Fogden et al., Hummingbirds :: Birding New Jersey!

It doesn't sound like a book I would consider a good buy. One has to marvel at the dishonesty of entitling a book "A Lifesize Guide To Every Species" when it only illustrates 70 out of 338 species!!

I really like this fascinating book and its excellent illustrations. As far as I'm aware 76 species are not illustrated. Obviously a shame, and it can be disappointing given the book's title, but this is still one of my most valued recent acquisitions. I'll look into the other suggestions too - thanks Tim!

oops, I misinterpreted the sentence in the review which said "... this “Life-size Guide to Every Species” fails to illustrate more than seventy of those species."

Not nearly as bad as I thought then, but yes still disappointing!

Not too many bird families where representation can be in a pocket-sized format for the whole family I suppose, and yes, I like the book but they do have bit of a cheek leaving 70 species not illustrated[its all phototgraphic, but I know a few folks who could have painted the rest!]
