Okay then. Like so many here I was a lurker from outside over the years, and the reason I registered finally was that I couldn't see the pictures TeaLovingDave posted about his Germany trip. (I come from Berlin originally). I have no zoo-related background and I'm a bit afraid -if I should post in threads- I ask the wrong questions or take up a point which will make all professional keepers or biologists roll their eyes.

From an early age I have always liked animals you can see, will say size matters :p f.ex. dogs start for me only from the height of a small pony, I'd prefer a mammoth to an elephant, especially because it has fur too.
The smallest animals I like are meerkats (yesyes, i can feel the eyerolling already!), and yes, it comes from all the tv shows. Until they started popping up in every possible animal programme I didn't even know meerkats existed.

My main interest are gorillas and consequently other great apes, and the way they communicate (I majored in linguistics) or how we communicate with them.

welcome to Zoochat.

Don't worry too much about the first point above, members here come in all forms from zoo keepers to zoo visitors (with very many more of the latter than the former, it must be said), and in all levels of knowledge.

For the second point, there are many members here with that same main interest!!

Glad to hear that you are enjoying my report enough to feel drawn to register! I'll be continuing with the report pretty soon; haven't had a chance to get writing done in a bit. Hopefully you will continue to enjoy reading my posts about the collections I visited :)

As Chlidonias notes, many of us are interested amateurs rather than professionals - myself included - so you will fit in well.

Thank you for the warm welcome!

and Parrotsandrew, no problem here :)
if everyone only cares to save their favourite animal from extinction or to have the best possible zoo environment, that's already something!
It's a kind of "biodiversity" of mind, I've read about the oddest favourite animals here at zoochat.
