Joined my Dad on his trip to Crowle Moors for Large Heath butterfly this morning, in the hope of adder or hobby. As so often the case, wildlife had other plans! Loads of Large Heath - no problem there - but when it came to new annual tetrapods...

260. Barn Owl - Tyto alba

16. Common Lizard - Zootoca vivipara

(A British reptile at last!)

Only a few new birds in the last couple of weeks due to work commitments.

204. Ring-necked Parakeet
205. Pied Flycatcher
206. Woodcock

Mammals
43. Red squirrel
44. Noctule bat
45. Western European hedgehog
46. Wood Mouse
47. Water vole (lifer)
48. Red fox

Herpetofauna
55. Viviparous lizard
56. Common newt
57. Edible frog
58. Pool frog
59. Moor frog
60. Common midwife toad
61. Alpine newt

I am especially happy with the water vole, which I saw near my house, as it is one of the very few native rodents I hadn't seen yet in NL (still need beaver, tundra vole, Arvicola scherman and the non-native black rat) and it is my 50th mammal species I have seen in NL

My bird list is now on 230, but I still have to translate a lot of names :p

One final bird from my road trip:

360 Chihuahuan Raven - Corvus cryptoleucus

One semi-local bird that I went to see a large flock of:

361 Wood Stork - Mycteria americana

One more year mammal:

32 Northern Raccoon

I stopped off at the seal colony at Cape Foulwind by Westport (on the West Coast of NZ) today and saw a few birds new for the year list.

553) European skylark Alauda arvensis
554) Variable oystercatcher Haematopus unicolor
555) Caspian tern Sterna caspia

And of course lintworm will be pleased for me that I am still adding mammals....

71) NZ fur seal Arctocephalus forsteri

A few recent additions ... firstly one from a couple of weeks ago that I forgot to post here:

184. Lesser Scaup (Aythya affinis) at Frodsham Marsh

Plus two from today's visit to RSPB Burton Mere Wetlands:

185. Spotted Redshank (Tringa erythropus)
186. Little Owl (Athene noctua)

Unexpectedly productive evening in the High Peak - was only really after the bird addition from a reliable site, but an opportunistic call-in at one of the sites I've been trying for Mountain Hare produced a spurt of brilliant new mammal views, including adult and young shrews investigating sheep droppings in full view in the path.

261. Common Sandpiper - Actitis hypoleucos

29. Mountain Hare - Lepus timidus
30. Field Vole - Microtus agrestis
31. Common Shrew - Sorex araneus

anyone has the possibility of beating me. There are still six months of the year left. Might be a bit harder for some localities than others though :p

I'm only 356 off. But I'm hoping to get another 250 to 300 this year, so I might come close.

Hoping to get around 50 mammals this year too.

:p

71) NZ fur seal Arctocephalus forsteri

I won't be able to get to that number most probably, for that I would have to get over 35 mammals species in NL this year, which is probably too much and my only trip outside the Netherlands will be to Europe's most land-mammal poor country, allthough I still hope for blue whales there :p

First an addition from my coastal trip, seems I left off one.

214 Brandt's Cormorant

That shuffles everything down a number...

So a couple more from the nearby mountains:

Birds

239 Veery
240 Red-naped Sapsucker
241 Pileated Woodpecker
242 Townsend's Warbler
243 Common Poorwill

Mammals

26 Columbian Ground Squirrel

Then a bigger update from a short trip to the Twin Cities:

Birds

244 Ruby-throated Hummingbird
245 Red-bellied Woodpecker
246 Great Crested Flycatcher
247 Northern Cardinal
248 Indigo Bunting
249 Common Grackle
250 Chimney Swift
251 Eastern Wood-Pewee
252 Ovenbird
253 Scarlet Tanager

254 American Redstart
255 Blue-winged Warbler
256 Clay-colored Sparrow

Mammals

27 Eastern Gray Squirrel
28 Eastern Chipmunk
29 Eastern Cottontail

Amphibians

2 American Toad
3 Gray Tree Frog

Also, not counting arthropods or anything, but I can't fail to mention that I saw my first ever fireflies. Completely breathtaking!

Spent an enjoyable couple of hours at a local nature reserve I didn't know existed until about a month ago, seeing nesting grey heron, little egret and great cormorant, little and great crested grebe and pochard and hearing a whole collection of unidentified songbirds. Did manage to see one new year species:

91. Common kingfisher

Then in the evening managed to find a new mammal for the year in my garden:

17. West European hedgehog

Went to Heybridge Basin today and managed to get a new species for the year among the masses of mallards, black-headed gulls, common terns and greylag geese.

92. Black-tailed godwit

Only four birds and two mammals off equalising my result last year and seeing as I am going to Norfolk later this summer I expect to be able to surpass this quite easily.

A day trip to Chiltern track, Ingleside and Warriewood/Irrawong reserve.
280. White cheeked honeyeater
281. Australian Brush Turkey* ( finally )
282. Scaly Breasted Lorikeet
283. Little Lorikeet
284. Scarlet Honeyeater
285. Buff Banded Rail
286. Yellow Tufted Honeyeater
287. Regent Honeyeater
