1.0 Philippine Mouse Deer has arrived and is now on show in Islands in Danger :) :)

:D Nisha and Thylo beat me to it, and I have to wait 8 days to see him. The chevrotain I mean, not Thylo.

From Facebook

A Philippine mouse deer – one of the smallest hoofed animals in the world – has arrived!

The new deer, which is not much bigger than a rabbit, is one of just 15 to be found in zoos across the whole of Europe.

We hope that the male deer – who can already be seen in our Islands in Danger exhibit - will soon be joined by a female as part of our plans to join the endangered species breeding programme for these threatened animals.

Excellent news all around. And on display..! :D

I have just read the Madrid Zoo thread hoping that there would be news of Jangoli, there is, Sami the other cow Asian elephant at this zoo has died, only in her twenties, cause of death yet unknown, she leaves an 18 month old male calf.

Sad news but actually nothing to do with Chester so can I suggest you post it in a Madrid thread as well!

As I stated clearly in my short post I first read about this on the Madrid thread by KEEPER, so why should I post it again?, secondly I suggest this news is relevant to Chester as Jangoli only moved to Madrid two weeks ago, of coarse if you do not agree with what I say, get one of the moderators to delete my writings, by all means.

Changing the thread back to Chester Zoo is there anyone on here who has a current bird species on show list (Zooterliste only shows all species held and not those currently on show) as hope to visit while on my week away doing my birding.

A short update from a visit today:

The Capybara have now moved into what was the Vicuna paddock. No longer mixed with the Tapirs who have remained in their usual enclosure

The indoor viewing for the Red River hogs is boarded over and sealed off following the arrival of a new male RRH

Saw the Mouse Deer. He is currently in the aviary behind the one that houses the Bleeding heart doves. Three layers of wire in the way so photos are all but impossible but he is visible

Right going from what I can remember from my last visit these species are either off-show or have left the collection, all the rest should be on-show somewhere but might not be labelled!

Cabot's Tragopan
Golden Conure
Johnstone's Lorikeet
Lesser Sulphur-crested Cockatoo
Mount Omei Liocichla
Pink Pigeon??
Purple-naped Lory
Red-vented Cockatoo
Socorro Dove
Talaud Red and Blue Lory
Temmincks Tragopan
White-necklaced Partridge
Yellow-backed Chattering Lory

Also one of the 2 species of Amazon is off show as well but suffering mind blank at the moment as they both look a like!

I have question marked the Pink Pigeon as it has arrived since I last visited.

It's somewhat disappointing to see these exhibits become increasingly sparse in population. Whilst the Capybara breeding (and presumably Tapir soon?) has been a positive, the loss of the Guanaco, Rhea and now perhaps Vicuna is something of a negative; the two mixed exhibits - regardless of how 'common' the inhabitants - balanced out well with the elusive bears (and now anteaters).

Adrian this is pretty accurate, but I haven't checked it since April.

So a bit misleading to say he is on show.

He's just in holding at the back for a 30 day period then he should go into the aviary with the bleeding hearts initially - unless plans change before then of course.

Saw him today - handsome little guy from what I could see - looking forward to a clearer viewing though.

On my recent trip to Edinburgh, purchasing my own deep-fried confection, I was treated to the glorious sight of an American tourist in a Scottish chip shop.

"Hi, can I get a deep-fried Mars bar and a coffee?"
"Sorry, we don't do coffee."
*uncomprehending silence*
"We've got beer..?"

Not on topic at all, of course...

OK, I just found this thread and am still stuck back on the deep friend Mars bar and coffee thing. This was so much fun, why did you all have to move it back on topic and start talking about animals?

I for one would never eat even a regular Mars bar or any other kind of candy bar other than pure chocolate (either milk or dark is fine, preferably one of the nicer organic fair trade types). But to deep fry it? That is just too much for me to fathom.

Now as to the quoted uncomprehension about lack of coffee. I am in the very small (I mean very, very small) minority of Americans who cannot stand coffee and in fact I have never had a cup of coffee in my life. What is completely incomprehensible to me is that European restaurants - and I am considering the UK part of Europe - do not serve iced tea!!!

This is the defacto cold beverage of choice here and I honestly do not know how you get by without it. I mean didn't tea come to the states from England and Europe? In the last half century since ice has been readily available, no one over there has had the sense to think "Hey, it's warm out, maybe we should try our tea cold instead of hot?" I make really good home brewed iced tea and I have half a mind to take a pitcher with me on my next trip across the pond to show you what you are missing. Unfortunately, since 9/11 the airports limit liquids to 2 ounces, which I will have gulped down before I even board the plane, let alone saving it for a trans-atlantic flight!

I don't drink either coffee or tea, so this is all of only an academic interest, but speaking as someone who doesn't particularly like either drink hot, I cannot see how either would be improved by being cold! :p

If I need to cool off with a drink, then a Coke, lemonade, or, if circumstances permit, a fine continental lager or local pale ale* would be my choice.

Deep-fried Mars bars are glorious.

*Please drink responsibly.
