Chester Zoo Your Personal Vision for Chester

just came across this thread, how about using the large grassy paddock for gorillas, the one which is currently used for gemsbok, etc obviously climbimg structures would be added and new indoor facilities built.

There is already a very large climbing structure in the gemsbok paddock - the monorail :D
Which is another reason why it's not suitable.

Well, the Gorillas could climb up it, take a tour round the zoo and get back off again at their own stop.......:D

If they expand the sealion enclosure, and it was just a bit of fun
I dream of the day that dolphins are back in the U.K
Does anyone know where the gorrilas will be Kept?

There isn't really anywhere that the pool could be extended to to match the size needed for two species.

I doubt dolphins will be back in zoos for a very long time. Very few places have facilities to keep them properly or have the finances or space to create a suitable tank for them, which is why they were phased out many years ago and were replaced by sealions in a few collections (Whipsnade springs to mind...)

I'm guessing gorillas will be somewhere in the forest zone, the current giraffe enclosure springs to mind, but i really don't know what the definate plan is.

Does anyone know where the gorrilas will be coming from?

As bongorob pointed out, gorillas are a long, long way down the line, so i doubt anything has even been decided yet...

Just a further point, it is advisable to research your statements before posting on this board as a fact. Chessington are getting a new enclosure for gorillas, not getting rid of them.

When the time comes, and its quite some way off, they will probably be allocated animals by the EEP- either a breeding group or an all male group depending on what's decided nearer the time. The individual animals might come from the Uk, or Europe, or some from both.

Chessington certainly aren't going out of Gorillas, they've only just obtained a new male. A new enclosure is planned for 2010 there.

The gorillas will be going in to the forest zone, which will be builtm on land which is owned by the zoo but is not yet developed.

What do people think of that?

Very comprehensive!

Perhaps you could try and limit the "big" animals to just one exhibit as lions, tigers, elephants, rhinos etc. are all showcased in two areas which rather lessens their impact.

I would say a few things:

New SOTJ - Why couldn't sotj remain where it is and the arctic world be on the zebra paddock? Lack of space?

New asian plains - With Gaur, Water Buffalo, Elephant, Rhino and a multitude of other hoof-stock i doubt the newly grown grass in the elephant paddock would last for long;)! Also it is not a fence separating asian plains and asian steppes, it is a cycle path which is more difficult to "remove";)! Also you would probably want to think twice about housing przevalski's with onagers as the stallions of both species are very territorial also, it is less educational mixing the two paddocks.

New congo wetlands - Wouldn't it be cheaper to just demolish the tropical realm and just start again, it would also make the building more functional.

Arctic world - All the species that you're suggesting would never fit on the SOTJ site (or the zebra paddock), also i think you can forget chester getting whales and polar bears even if these are just ideas!

New ROTRA - there are already gibbons in with the orangs:confused:.

New dolphin/sea-lion/seal pool - I'm not sure this area is big enough.

New china and australian areas - I'm definately not sure this area is big enough.

Overall, i like your thoughts, you just need to think some of them through more carefully.

What do people think of that?
Its not to bad but some of your ideas have been suggested within the zoo for years particularly the one for the Giraffe House. Some of your other ideas are nice but the space just isn`t big enough for what you are trying to do.

Wow, no offense is meant here but there quite a few reasons why most of those are rather unrealistic. Have you visited Chester before may i ask?

i haveni wanted to move the spirit of the Jaguar into the south american main area!, it would make sence for the animals to be moved into where they come from in the wild

they wouldnt move it, because its is a pretty new exhibit and would be a waste of money too move.

yes i know, i said it would make sence!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
