Don't forget about polish winter. Practically from october till end of april the doors for hippos are closed. Elephants have access to outer enclosure but hippos no. So they stay inside for long seven months. With medium-sized pool and small bricked-floor enclosure. I'm sure that in Africarium roof will be opened (for short time of course) even in winter months.

Absolutly no reason to Keep any big mammals year round indoors-we have the same winter here in germany !, and all hippos here ( and not only hippos-even giraffes, oakpis, antelopes-have access to outdoor exhibits-and they really like and enjoy it !
Yes, and in some Zoos, all These species can use the outdorore xhibits in the night-of Cours eonly in summer.Rhinos,giraffes ,Tapirs ,apes,and also most antelopes can't bekept in winter times a Long time outdoors-so would you Keep them also year round indoros ? Is defenitely the same as like as keeping hippos the same way.
I agree with you that would be better if hippos in Afrykarium have outer enclosure, but I can’t agree that new enclosure will be worse for them than present one in elephant house.
Btw. why we are against keeping big hoofed mammals (red deer or eland for example) under roof and generally accept keeping mouse deer or duikers in houses (without opened-roof) all year round. They have the same lungs, nostrils, eyes. Thinking in this way is much better keeping pygmy than common hippos in house but according to me there is no difference.

First animals moved to Afrykarium: four females fur seals (two males remained in the existing pool) and twenty penguins from Gdańsk Zoo. First time admitted them into the water yesterday (penguins and two females only, the third one and her child are still behind the scenes). In this week males should be removed and next 40 – 50 penguins arrive.
The new exhibit is so huge it could easily hold a couple hundred penguins and still seem a little empty. I assume they have built it with the idea of eventually breeding up to a much larger colony size.
20 penguins should arrive from England, next 20 from Netherlands and 10 from France. Zoo plans to keep 120 birds.
The source on ZTL is given as a personal observation in August; however I have reason to suspect this is a misidentification. Will look into the matter further....
Well, that would suggest two points of information on Zootierliste need editing - the cited origin of the animals, and the sex of the animals as ZTL lists the individuals as being 1,1 
That would also suggest that I need to make a visit to wrocław zoo in the near future

Ticket holders will have access to Afrykarium from 12 to 16. Of course not everything will be ready,for example hippos and aardvarks probably will not be transferred to new home. So main stars should be manatees and sharks and underwater view of penguins and seals.
