There are a few more than one river dolphin in captivity! mostly in South America though. I believe they have even bred them! There are so many dolphins that are washed up on our shores every year! the most care they get is to be pushed back out to sea. I personally think this is cruel as if they cant swim due to illness then that is why they have come into shallow water so avoid drowning. Some rescued Dolphins would be ideal even if they were just on temporary display until they were fit to go back to the wild. How far along is Biota now anyways?
Biota is a dormant project right now, a victim of the credit crunch, but if and when it is developed it is unlikely to hold cetaceans. The proposed NIRAH aquarium is a more likely candidate, but that project is not much more than a pipedream at the moment.
There was speculation on the internet when Parques Reunidos took over Blackpool Zoo that they may wish to develop a dolphinarium there, as many of their European and American parks already have dolphins. But that speculation has so far proved wrong.
As others have already said, we are unlikely to see any captive cetaceans in the UK for the foreseeable future, with good reason.

I believe it was Blackpool that was mooted for dolphins, as their Spanish owners seem to be building dolphin facilities at all their facilities.
But i personally cannot see dolphins being held in the UK ever again, the feeling in this country is too well rooted against dolphins being kept rightly or wrongly for our entertainment.
The British general public are and have been brainwashed into believing that these shows are cruel and unnecessary, but tell me if ant tourist goes to Florida on holiday and does not include sea world on their visit.
No investor will pour millions of pounds into the facilities needed for dolphins with this background of public feeling, as well as the problems in the financial world at the moment.
I know a senior staff member at Whipsnade. They are not having dolphins, ever.

Do you think that, if west midlands got dolphins, they would mix with the sealions?

WMSP's pool is just big enough for the current sealions and there is no room to extend it large enough to share with dolphins.
oh good, because with the state of the sealion pool i wouldnt like to see how they would house dolphins (sorry for going a bit offtrack)
as fom blackpool, i have never visited but it most probably has the potential to house them, as for brainwashed english people, can thier minds ever be changed?
Yes, many facilites do mix sealions and dolphins in the same pool with no trouble.
However if any dolphins do come to the UK it will surely be to completely new facilites, they will never be kept in any of the old dolphin pools which are still in existence or in slightly adapted sealion pools.
I don't think there's a problem with Whipsnade's pool. It is way too small for dolphins and was probably out of date when it was built, but it's a decent size for 3 adult sealions and the one juvenile. It's very deep and the do have access to the 3 pools all at the same time.

i have also herd that if anywhere is to aqquire dolphins it would be blackpool , i herd it as a possibilyty from staff there and staff who work for an animal training company which used to have dolphins but just has sea lions now .
three? im pretty sure its two, one indoor, one outside?
that does explane the lack of land in the main pool
how about we suggest some zoos that could build conitions for dolphins
