Just found this on the BBC site. It's a short video about June Williams who is releasing a book about growing up in Chester Zoo. There's some good historical images, but I'm a bit annoyed that they use footage of the one swaying elephant in the main herd...

That's a pretty interesting video.
That is annoying! Doesn't make the zoo look good.
Is she the only one who weaves?

Birma is the only one who sways consistently (obviously from her past on her own in France) but I think Thi Hi Way (ex-London) does occaisonally sway, I think (Thi is the one in the video, because Birma and Sheba are kept together).

Is Thi Hi Way one of the last 3 elephants from London?
If so why isn't she at Whipsnade?
Also, why are Birma and Sheba kept seperately?

I think Thi Hi Way left a couple of years before London stopped keeping them

Ashley, sent you a PM by the way

Thi was sent from London to Chester because she was very nervous and stressed in the confines of the London House. I don't know why they didn't send her to Whipsnade- possibly because they hadn't formed a proper herd then and Chester already had a male so there was a chance to breed from her.

Thi does still stereotype- last time I went to Chester she spent most of the time standing in one place and bobbing her head up and down(as opposed to actual rocking)

Getting back to the original thread about June Williams and the book, did any member of Zoobeat ever meet George Mottershead?

I will have to buy this book, and get a better insight into the begining of one of my favourite zoos

Tim Rowlands was one of the very first junior members to join and look where he is now!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, see this is why this forum is so great. The stuff you learn here is amazing. Is there another staff still there that joined the Junior members?

Just looked for this book on Amazon. Hard to believe they want £77 for it? Seems a lot for a paperback. Any comments?

Keep an eye on Ebay, they come up now and then and sell for far far less than that particular Amazon Marketplace seller thinks it's worth. Given that the same seller has a used copy for £4000, I think they may have made a pricing error :D

Referring back a few posts, Thi
left London as part of the reduction of animals. Her departure was shown in the documentary, 'The Ark', which is available on DVD.
