Edinburgh Zoo Developments at Edinburgh Zoo

The Drill and Aye Aye have not moved out as yet. The old Gorilla house has macaques who are in quarantine at the moment. Also the old Macaque exhibit now has European Otters now who are also in quarantine. So don't expect any moves to be happening soon.

Very interesting, are they quarantining the otters for the HWP?
Hopefully the langur baby is a female.

I do not know the answer to this.

Wow, what an intresting mix, maned wolf and anteater!
do you know what happend to the zoos elephants, sally, and do you know is she was african or asian

Will they source a new aye-aye male from Jersey soon (there is a big surplus of them at Jersey Zoo)?

Is ISIS upt to date here, as it shows only 2.3 at Jersey?
Perhaps WMSP could be persuaded to part with their lone male.

The last elephant at Edinburgh was a female African and she went to Whipsnade

Re: aye-ayes. I just looked in on ISIS and indeed they do only have 2.3 individuals now. I was perhaps living in the past when they had 5.4 or even a more skewed sex ratio of aye-ayes. ;)

I seems Jersey Zoo has redistributed its aye aye group between the 7 establishments keeping aye-ayes (nr. 7: Berlin Zoo). I just hope that with these rather recent movements breeding of ayes-ayes will be promoted. At this moment in time only Bristol Zoo is breeding them regularly, and not even Jersey itself is having any success.

I agree that perhaps West Midlands should sent its male to Edinburgh for breeding. One question in this respect: does anyone know anything about the current relatedness of ayes-ayes in Europe?

Okapikpr, what is the status of the SSP aye-aye population. Duke University is the prime breeding facility, but SF Zoo has had a 2008 successful - if unexpected - birth.

Does Duke have several breeding pairs?
What is the basis of their success (where does this differ from the European zoos)?
What is the history and status of the Denver aye aye pair?

According to ISIS the following changes have taken place to the stock.

0.1 aye aye, has the male died or been moved?
1.2 white lipped deer a new female has been acquired
0.0.1 purple faced langur shown as a recent birth.

but then again with ISIS, pinch of sat anyone?

I meant to add that 2.0 Bawean deer have also arrived, i had hoped to see a female or two arrive from Poznan, but maybe they are going to get some females in the future.
Poznan and Edinburgh are the only zoos in Europe keeping these deer.

see, my dad went to the zoo years ago, and he said he saw asian elephant, but, i then I saw a picture of a african there!

is there any news on them getting any Gaur yet and have the Kulan arrived

There will be free admission to the zoo and HWP on 30th November to celebrate St Andrews day here in Scotland, should bring in the crowds.

Latest Visit

Just back from another trip to the Zoo... spoke to some of the keepers around the big cat area and managed to get some information

1. Mercedes the polar bear is going to the Highland Wildlife Park
2. They have a new Amur leopard female (who is VERY cute) and once she and the male have finished their 6 months quarantine they will also be going to HWP
3. New arrivals include wildcats and european otters
4. Edinburgh Zoo is getting the wolves pack (from HWP i think, when mercedes goes there) they are gonna be housed near the zebra enclosure.
5. The female tiger Chandra will also be moving on once she has finished her quarantine and they are going to get another female sumatran tiger

While wandering around the purple faced languars have a baby, the patagonian sea lion has been joined by two females, there is a new enclosure for the beavers and i finally saw the aye-aye!!!

My Pictures will be up soon :)
Take care
Lesley
