ZSL London Zoo ZSL London Zoo News 2014

So I have been given to understand, although I must admit that when I visited on Monday it actually appeared to be the larger of the two animals that looked like a hybrid. Of course, the younger animal *could* be larger....

A visit after the V Festival perchance? ;)

Queued for an hour on Saturday for my first visit to the zoo. It was absolutely brilliant, and my first okapi didn't disappoint! I actually don't mind the zoo being busy actually. It's abit of sweet evidence that the multi million, multi national "animal welfare" barons haven't beaten London Zoo! Oh and if anyone is visiting London Zoo with someone else, you can get in both for £26 as it is 2for1 on two adults with tube travel cards. We did it and saved £26!

I am a member of ZSL, live locally and pop in regularly. Since the TV show was aired it has got unbelievably busy. That show is the best publicity ever.

I think the zoo looks amazing in the programme and comes across very well.

A tip to anyone in London over the last weeks of summer and light evenings. I had a great view briefly of the tiger cubs from the path that runs along the perimeter fence and it was very nice to watch. A few other people stopped to look too.

the programme has probably helped Whipsnade too, yesterday it was the busiest I have seen it in the 9 years that I became a regular visitor again- at 1030 their was a traffic jam over a mile long, & it took 45 mins to do the last mile.

True, and London certainly need that after the furore surrounding their recent Zoo Lates! Let's hope some of the money generated from the increased footfall goes into the two sites, particularly Whipsnade.

Not sure if this has been asked already, but does anyone know where ZSL will source their Asian lions from for the new exhibit? Certainly they'll keep the three resident lioness.

I would imagine in the first instance they will just add a new unrelated male- which will be sourced through the EEP/studbook keeper. Or if they want to be daring, they could get two male siblings that have grown up together, if they want to make an even better display.

Once again ZSL are organising a high profile fundraising event:

Friday 17 October
Eventim Apollo, London

Back by popular demand, after ticket sales last year went wild and completely sold out! If you're a comedy fan then we've got a treat for you. Roar with Laughter promises to be a top night out, featuring cutting-edge talent including:

Seann Walsh - David O'Doherty - Sean Lock - Ed Byrne
Stewart Lee - Lucy Porter - Phil Nichol - Greg Burns

All proceeds from the event will support the ZSL Lions400 campaign. With only 400 Asian lions left in the wild, never has the need been greater to ask for your support. ZSL promises an enjoyable, fun-filled evening, and with your help we can secure the future for the majestic Asian lion.

Once again ZSL are organising a high profile fundraising event:

Such a high profile event for a zoo! I can't wait!!
Obviously a much more significant event for ZSL than getting rid of the servals, closely followed by the cheetahs, gibbons, macaques and francois langurs!
Seriously, how is this London zoo news?! When's the next London zoo streak? ZSL should carry a government health warning... ' being a fellow may seriously damage your ( mental) health!!

Unfortunately it seems a sign of the times:(, but nearly all the Zoos' websites and Facebook pages seem to be dominated by this sort of publicity, in fact almost anything goes as long as its not detailed news about the animal collection. Its a trend that's been developing more and more I fear. I used to look on the Zoo websites for animal news, but scarcely bother any more.

Edit- I should perhaps add that I too have no objection to fundraising events, either held inside(if conducted properly) or outside the Zoos. In this day and age they are probably vital to their continued survival. It is a pity however that news about the animal collections themselves tends to become rather submerged under the various other publicity.

I have no objection to an event like this, provided that ZSL hires a suitable theatre for it or erects a marquee in the main zoo car park, well away from the animals.

Agree, I really don't see what the problem is, just because it is a zoo doesn't mean all fund raising has to be to do with animals, I work in social housing and our charity events don't involve houses. I fail to see how a sponsored streak* or a comedy event to raise money for ZSL projects is an issue.

*so long as this is done on private land and made so that people can avoid it if they would be offended. I think it sounds quite fun to be fair, but people would pay for me to put my clothes back on :p

I don't object to fund raising events, just don't see them as ' zoo news' either on here, or ZSL newsletters etc!
I find the diminishing collection far more significant news personally, but most seem to think that doesn't rate as news & choose to brush over it by going on about how wonderful the £4m lion enclosure might be!
What was until 20-30 years ago the best zoo in the country is falling well down the 2nd division among UK Collections! A few good exhibits, but hardly any animals!

I don't know why I bother.

Clearly your negativity knows no bounds. It is news because it is an event ZSL are running to raise money so that the zoo will continue to be a place people actually want to come to.

To those who have concerns about noise, as my post mentions, it is taking place at the Apollo in Hammersmith.

Really, some of you never knowingly pass on a chance to bash ZSL. Regardless of what you think of the state of the collection, whinging about the fact that they are actually doing something to raise money is utterly pathetic.

Sorry, I didn't know whether 'Eventim Apollo' was animal, vegetable, mineral or abstract. But I do understand Hammersmith. And so I'm pleased.

I did not agree with the late night booze ups, see my comments previously, and as for streaking in the zoo, the least that is said about that the better, I also like like your good self and indeed Ian remember the days when there was a far greater number of animals on display, I also agree , as I always do:)with Pertinax that web sites and facebook pages have become very commercial, to my annoyance I have been blocked from a zoo facebook page from a zoo that ranks second after Regents Park in my list of favourites, just for asking a few simple questions. On the other hand, from what I have read on here from younger members, seen on television
and observed the current visitor numbers, they would seam to be heading very much in the right direction, they are far less animals living in Regents Park, of coarse, but personally I quite like this Penguin Beach, Gorilla Kingdom, Tiger Territory business, on animal welfare grounds alone, how long was it since tigers bred here before Tiger Territory, and how many penguins were born in the museum piece, Lubitkin pool,?

Are the gibbons, macaques and langurs definitely leaving?

Dunno ..., I think / feel some suggestive comments on here are hardly knowing the full facts.

I seriously would like to see an update on the Masterplan where all fits in (Tiger Territory and Lions of Gir et cetera). Only, then can one make any measured assessment of which primate species are likely to stay or go.

I would expect the gibbons, macaques and langurs in their present locations and given the lion development over here do not fit the theme. Much more likely something will give near / next to Tiger Territory (hoped for ..., not fact).
