Must agree with OrangePerson on the people in the bat walk thru but it happens at all bat walk thru's why do people do it.

They confuse "Ghost train" with "home where sound sensitive animals live" We got a right earful for shushing this stupid woman "Don't shush me, I'm bleeping terrified" What about the name "Fruit BAT Forest" didn't you understand!

Visited yesterday, lions weren't shy and maybe we should expect the pitter pat of lion cub feet? I thoroughly enjoyed the faces of the horrified parents trying to explain why the lions were playing piggybacks :D

Then why did she go in?

Busy Bank Holiday Sunday

I went to Chester today, partly because it was the only day in a short trip up north that was promised decent weather and partly to see the results of the kids-go-free offer. This is not my normal choice for zoo visiting, but I admit that I was curious.
The zoo was very busy indeed, when I arrived around 9.50 there were two lanes of traffic streaming into the zoo and all the tarmac car parking was already full. There were no queues at the entry points but I don't know how long before 10 they were opened. There were certainly lots of children in family parties and the predictable choke points were very crowded - the bridges, the paths past the elephants and the chimps, the ramp up to RotRA and so on. Equally predictably, there were long queues for the Ladies Toilets, especially the ones between the canal bridge and the forest buffalo. There were also a lot of staff on duty, which was good - although the litter-bin emptiers could have used some extra hands.
I am very pleased to say that I enjoyed the experience. I saw a lot of families enjoying themselves and I saw absolutely no reprehensible behaviour of any sort. Some of the youngsters were a bit noisy of course, but with their parents or relatives present they were far better behaved than many school parties I have encountered. The worst bit of ignorance was a young man confidently telling his family that the hyrax were wombats - and we've all seen and heard worse than that.
I confess that I didn't attempt to use the catering facilities - enjoying a peaceful packed lunch in the shelter beside the Philippine spotted deer.
One small item of animal news - the Philippine chevrotain is now in the enclosure next to the argus pheasants in Islands in Danger and can easily be seen with a little patience.

Visiting the other day, I noticed the small building formerly containing midwife toads near Spirit of the Jaguar remains empty, anybody have any notion of what the plans for it are?

Probably be demolished.

I went Chester yesterday too, and while I don't regret it entirely, I certainly didn't enjoy myself as much as usual. Way too many people I felt suffocated, and I did see some ignoramuses. Including people that thought a chimp was biting his friend's head when he was quite clearly kissing him. I kid you not.
Roll on term time I say, it's so hard to relax and concentrate when there's loads of families about.

I think this enclosure should be either demolished or converted into storage. Suppose it could be used for some British wildlife, field mice etc but it looks a difficult enclosure for keepers to work on.

Went last week, I like the bats, 'specially standing in the 'window' of the tunnel and feeling them whizz past your head, the negative is the danger of being deafened by the piercing screams of stupid people who should not go in if they they are that scared of bats.

The bats are a bit smaller, but i can do that standing in my garden on a summer evening! Daughter still screams!

We were there when the Tiger cubs were conceived a year or three back. Lots of parents going 'Oh, they are playing piggy back". My eight year old turns to one and says 'No, they are not, they are mating". he wants to be a zookeeper when he grows up!

Zootierliste is listing Chester as holding naked mole rats now, anybody know anything about this?
