ZSL Whipsnade Zoo Whipsnade 2014 #2

Not quite yet my friend-still building the accommodation behind the kudu/impala stables afaik!;)

Nice to see ZSL empthasised they'll be off-show when they arrive, but it's still a missed opportunity imo. Surely wouldnt cost much to reconvert the facility once the girls return to London. Plus, what zoo has both African AND Asian lions on site and on exhibit?!?!?

I see and no no. African Lions including male called Spike is in Africa Section and the Asiatic Lions are in the Asia Section but they won't be viewed

Sorry, I posted an almost identical point whilst you were posting yours!

Be prepared for a lot of roaring at Whipsnade when they arrive ;)- because the residents will no doubt hear the newcomers but not have visual contact.

Another valid point, and one that adds fuel to the arguement as to why they could'nt have built the accommodation "front of house." No doubt casual visitors, and I would dare say a few ZSL Memebers, will question WHY they can't view these animals when they've paid "XYZ" amount of money to get in/renew membership.

I'm looking forward to the girls arriving, but it really wouldnt cost much to rectify the housing issue. :confused:Maybe ZSL are preparing elaborate explanatory signage as we speak!

yeah that's because African and Asiatic Lions don't mix so they will be in separate sections.

Let's not forget that the Terrace primates will also soon be arriving from London too! Once again, like the lions, they'll also be off-show.

The Lions I understand leftLondon Zoo for Whipsnade yesterday . The Francois Langur , Gibbons & Spider Monkeys have also gone.

I think you mean the Sulawesi Macaques? The Spiders are now in the Gorilla Kingdom area.

As I've said before, I think Whipsnade should keep these surplus Primates, if they can build enclosures for them, or alternatively they should be merged into groups elsewhere. I cannot see much point in them returning to London or where they would go there.

So the Sulawesi Macaques have replaced the Spiders in Gorilla Kingdom area?

Yes I did mention it on the London Zoo thread... although I didn't see them in the visible exterior or interior enclosure yesterday as I suspect they were still moving/setting up the logs etc in those areas -

....
Any idea why they moved the Spider Monkeys rather than the Macaques to Whipsnade?- as this has required a 'double' move.

Could be many contributing reasons - breeding group , specialist diet/attention , age/size of the group , numbers of animals involved - future intentions.

I was up there yesterday and I took a fair few photos. Was excited to see the Blesbok in the main paddock.

Quick question, I wrote a piece for this site but I have a feeling it will be too long as a post, is there a way of hyperlinking to a file or something?

Maybe just post it as a new thread (with multiple posts if it's too long for just one) then it won't have to be in a news-related thread...?
