Darling Downs have confirmed on their FB page that they will in fact not be breeding them but one day, we plan to import younger animals to breed and rebuild the Australian population of this marvellous species.

the male at DDZ is the one from Alma Park, previously the breeding male at Western Plains. He is fairly ancient and certainly wouldn't be much use for breeding now anyway. Even the female is already 16 years old (bred at Adelaide in 1998). And of course (not surprisingly) the two are related as well.
 
Any chance that somebody might import some fresh blood - Brazilians given all the health issues with Malaysians - into the region? Do tapirs get around the quarantine issues (being odd-toed ungulates) that plague most hoofstock imports?

News on the radio has been reporting today that M'Beli has had her baby this week... no info on Taronga's page or Facebook, and no info on baby except that mum and bub doing well so far...

Its a baby boy. North shore times announced it. In a article. Article stated that Mbeli is shy and very protective of her baby. No date or time of birth mentioned.
 
First birth in the restructured group? I presume the Taronga Gorilla group now consists of Kibali and the four females including 'Frala', and with only her two sons still seperate. Is that right?
 
Kibali has 3 females - M'Beli, Johari, and Frala.

Frala's sons are still off-exhibit waiting to be transferred to New Zealand (early 2015 is the rumour).

The only thing I don't like about the revamped Lemur Walkthrough is that if you've been through it before, they still want you to go through all the talk and tour before getting in with the Lemurs for the photos you want to take... *sigh*

I tend to avoid it now because of that - and the times it's open tends to clash with the Gorilla and Chimp talks which are the best times for getting photos of those divine creatures.

I DO like that they've tightened up the behaviour requirements of people/children going through though... the Lemurs got quite stressed at one point early in the piece and they had to stop the walkthrough for a while to get them settled again.

Maybe I need to "cultivate" the Lemur keepers so that I can get to walk through to get nice pics of their charges without having to do the whole tour/talk thing each time... There could be a photo book in it for them like I give to a few of the other keeper teams whose charges I've gotten lovely photos of over the course of the year... *grin*

I'd be quite happy to just sit in a quiet spot and just snap away unobtrusively (I have a long lens) if I were allowed to do so for a little longer than the tour time allows.
