Woodland Park Zoo Woodland Park Zoo News 2014

Thanks for posting this snowleopard. It was indeed fascinating. I love when zoos do this kind of meet our animals type of post.

I don't remember, what were the zoo's future plans for the elephants? Were they going to expand the exhibit and acquire another Asian elephant and phase out Watoto/wait until she died? I'm just curious if this affects any plans now.

UPDATE: Nevermind, found my answer.

Woodland Park Zoo has issued a point-by-point rebuttal of claims made by PETA regarding the death of Watoto and other aspects of the zoo's elephant management.

The Facts About Elephants at Woodland Park Zoo
Woodland Park Zoo loves our elephants Chai and Bamboo, and we deeply mourn the loss of their herd mate, Watoto. Her recent death sent waves of grief through our community of staff, volunteers, members and guests. She was part of our family and will forever be honored in our memories.
Woodland Park Zoo’s elephant program continues to spark dialogue in our community. Productive dialogue has led to positive change, including the creation of the community-based Elephant Task Force, which concluded our elephants are in good physical and emotional health, and recommended some improvements to our program already underway.
Unfortunately, this dialogue is being colored by inflammatory campaigns from local and national activist groups and the media they garner. These campaigns rely on alarming sound bites that confuse and mislead well-intentioned people and mischaracterize the zoo as profit-driven and entertainment-focused. We are a conservation- and education-based nonprofit whose earnings are reinvested in our mission to “save animals and their habitats through conservation leadership and engaging experiences, inspiring people to learn, care and act.”
Counterpoints
Woodland Park Zoo is a community-based organization that remains open to dialogue, and while we certainly respect personal conviction related to animals, we believe you deserve to draw your conclusions based on accurate information.
We invite you to spend a few minutes reading and absorbing the following counterpoints to misleading arguments published in the most recent action alert issued by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

All in all a good summation of the situation it seems. As usual PETA appeals to emotions so that they don't need to be bothered by things like facts.

According to the zoo's email newsletter, the cheetah exhibit was indeed temporary and the cats are leaving the zoo on November 23rd. No word on what will occupy that exhibit space upon their departure.

The elephant program is coming to an end. Both elephants will be sent elsewhere in the AZA sometime over the spring.

That's a big turn around, and a shame IMHO. One imagines that Woodland Park should be able to maintain elephants long-term in an improved enclosure, but I suspect (counter to the statement in the article) that the zoo has bowed to pressure. It will be interesting to see what they replace the elephants with - Indian Rhino perhaps?

Let's look at where the elephants will most likely be going with in the AZA-------
-Oklahoma City Zoo
-Honolulu Zoo

Or if they are to be split up, I could see Chai going to a breeding collection (St. Louis?) with Bamboo going to San Diego...?

What are your speculations?

I am not sure what the options are, but hopefully these animals can be used to bolster a small herd that is facing the same problems as Woodland Park - if that situation currently exists.

It is stated in the article that the two elephants will not be split up and will both go to the same AZA facility.

I'm thinking OKC but hoping maybe they'll be sent to Tulsa. Chai could get another breeding attempt (natural) with the zoo's bull Sneezy (42). They're a great age to add company to the zoos cows Gunda (64) Sooky (41).

L.A. Zoo is probably the best bet. Closer, with a new facility that needs more elephants. Plus gives Billy an opportunity to breed.
