Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo Beardsley Zoo News

What's the deal with this new exhibit area they are supposedly building that they broke ground on? When's it going to be completed?

The new exhibit area is called Pampas Plains, and it is one of the several areas that will be included in their South American Adventure plan. It will include new exhibits for the zoo's Chacoan Peccaries and Greater Rheas, as well as bringing in new animals like Giant Anteaters and Vicuñas. Construction is going on in the former Llama exhibit next to the Maned Wolves (the wolves will also technically be part of Pampas Plains.) Hopefully it will be completed before or during this summer.

That's really good to hear! About time they did something new and expanded there! They don't seem to get a lot of funding from the state, unlike say RWP zoo in providence.

The zoo actually got state funding for the first time in 20 years for one of the other phases of South American Adventure. The state granted $2.5 million for the "Spirits of the Cloud Forest" exhibit, featuring Andean Bears.
Other animals that will be new in the SAA are tapirs and spider monkeys.

In other news, Thylo announced that the zoo's Red Wolf pair and their (grown-up) pups left. Turns out they moved back to the Wolf Conservation Center in NY.

It will probably be completed within the next two years. No official diagram of the exhibit.
It would be cool if they put a big waterfall in the exhibit like the elephant exhibit at RWP or the tiger exhibit at southwick. Beardsley doesn't have an exhibit like that. I love waterfalls in an animal exhibit. It's really scenic, natural looking, and relaxing.

20 years is a crazy amount of time to not get money from the state. RWP got even more money from the state recently even though they blew through the money that was SUPPOSED to go towards a polar bear exhibit.

Oh I should add I went recently and the smell in the rain forest wasn't that bad. And they weren't masking it with chemical smells(which is the worst of all). It was clearly cleaned better.

Loving this thread, new member from CT here. Only went to this zoo once in high school 6ish years ago. Want to go back!

Thanks, I'm excited. I actually had a season pass for the Zoo in Forest Park up in Springfield MA last year, but I never was able to attend due to health concerns. With it, I had free entry to Beardsley, but unfortunately I never made it there either.

Does anybody here talk about the Springfield one? I've actually not been yet, but the monkeys incident concerns me now.

It's a cute TINY zoo land wise(much smaller than beardsely), but has a lot of animals packed into small area. The monkey incident was a fluke.

Yeah, that seems to be the opinion, which is good!

Too bad it doesn't get more discussion though. I'd love to learn more about it

The new male Amur Tiger from the Indianapolis Zoo, Petya, is now on exhibit. He has not been in the same enclosure as Naka yet, but they're getting along well through the fence.
The new Red Wolf pair from the Wolf Conservation Center can go on exhibit, but they are currently too nervous to venture from their indoor quarters.
The new Amur Leopards are much more active than Sofiya. Unfortunately they weren't out on my visit 2 weeks ago.
Pampas Plains construction has progressed despite the recent snowstorms. The Maned Wolf viewing platform was torn down and replaced with a new one that connects to an extended raised walkway, leading down to the former Llama exhibit. There are 3 observation areas along the walkway, including the wolf one.

Have you ever gone to the Zoo in Forest Park?

Thank you!

I know last year they had a deal where if you had a season pass for the Zoo in Forest Park you had free entry to both zoos all year. Hopefully they do again this year so I can check Beardsley and Forest Park out!

Ken. Based on your location I would check out southwick zoo as well. It's way better than beardsely(and I'm a beardsely fan!)

Anybody attend here or the Forest Park Zoo yet this year?

May I suggest you starting a separate thread for the Forest Park Zoo if you want to discuss it. It's not really appropriate to have the news and reviews of a zoo in a different zoo's news thread..
