Taronga Zoo Taronga Zoo News 2015

here's the article about the snow leopard move:
Snow Leopards prepare for their big move | Taronga

3 Feb 2015

Our much-loved pair of Snow Leopards are preparing for their move to Billabong Wildlife Park in Port Macquarie today.

‘Khumbu’ and ‘Samara’ have had their breakfasts served to them in their transport boxes for weeks to get them comfortable for moving day. Keepers say they’re very relaxed and have been happily eating their breakfasts in the boxes every morning.

Taronga has had Snow Leopards since 1990. Taronga Senior Carnivore Keeper, Justine Powell, said: “It’s sad to see them leaving Taronga after 24 years, they are such a unique cat, they’ll certainly be missed.”

Was at Taronga yesterday - found the Macaws and Agouti. They are in Patrick's old digs opposite the Red Kangaroos.

Also wandered by the Spider Monkeys... and they have a new young male in with the 2 older females. Apparently he's been in there for a couple of weeks now...

What macaw species did you found?

A female Goodfellows tree kangaroo has arrived from Singapore Zoo (named Kimbe). Nupela (Parum x Kwikila) is apparently being sent to Healesville Sanctuary.

What is the current situation at Taronga?
A breeding pair again?

And the Singapore female came from …?!!

1.0 'Parum' from Melbourne
0.1 'Kwikila' from Belfast
0.1 'Nupela' (offspring of these two)
0.1 'Kimbe' (new female from Singapore)

Salsa the original intended breeding female couldn't successfully rear her joeys so she was sent down to Ballarat Wildlife Park (not sure if they will try to acquire a male and breed her down there or not considering her unsuccessful past).

Nupela had a rocky start too - Kwikila kicked her out of the pouch early in the piece, but keepers popped her back in and luckily she stayed put after that...

she came originally from San Diego Zoo

Thanks Chlidonias. It seems quite a few Goodfellow's originally came out of San Diego Zoo to the Old Worlds (Europe+Asia+Australia)!

It is nice to see that the international cooperation for this endangered tree kangaroo species is so good - and well led at that!

Bugger! :( :( :(

I was at the zoo on Monday and looked down from the Lemur Walkthrough towards her island. I saw some people on the path looking across to her fig tree and I thought about going down to see her, but the weather was turning so I went back up the hill to the Nocturnal House.

:(

Vale Mary the Muellers Gibbon aged 57. She has been part of the zoo for ages. They tried to introduce a new male she wouldn't have him. after her original partner died. She has seen some tuff times. During a big serve storm the tree she was in blow over and instead of running away she stayed there till the keepers come in the next morning. I will miss her vocalisation. It want be the same in that part of the zoo for a while. RIP Mary GIbbon.
