Our last zoo visit of our holiday was icbp newent

99. Hobby Falco subbuteo
100. Barbary falcon Falco pelegrinoides
101. Lesser kestrel Falco naumanni
102. Greater kestrel Falco rupicoloidus
103. Red-footed Falcon Falco vespertinus
104. Lappet-faced vulture Torgos tracheliotus
105. Mountain caracara Phalcoboenus megalopterus

There's one more obvious collection for us but after that things are going to go very slowly. I think the initial estimate of 130 species was slightly optimistic. If were lucky and find a few hidden gems we might get 120.
For anyone thinking of visiting newent some of the aviaries are blocked off because of breeding brahminy kites. The chicks will be put back with the parents soon so everything should be accessible within the next few weeks.

For anyone interested if you are over in Northern Ireland and haven't seen a Western Screech Owl yet for the challenge, they have one at World of Owls at Randalstown.

Our last zoo visit of our holiday was icbp newent

99. Hobby Falco subbuteo
100. Barbary falcon Falco pelegrinoides
101. Lesser kestrel Falco naumanni
102. Greater kestrel Falco rupicoloidus
103. Red-footed Falcon Falco vespertinus
104. Lappet-faced vulture Torgos tracheliotus
105. Mountain caracara Phalcoboenus megalopterus

There's one more obvious collection for us but after that things are going to go very slowly. I think the initial estimate of 130 species was slightly optimistic. If were lucky and find a few hidden gems we might get 120.
For anyone thinking of visiting newent some of the aviaries are blocked off because of breeding brahminy kites. The chicks will be put back with the parents soon so everything should be accessible within the next few weeks.

Finally got around to visiting one of the best falconry collections in the UK on Saturday and added quite a few more to our list.

106. African pygmy falcon Polihierax semitorquatus
107. African goshawk Accipiter tachiro
108. Swainsons hawk Buteo swainsoni
109. Chimango Milvago chimango
110. Barred owl Strix varia

As I said there are a few more species around but its going to be very slow from now on.

A trip north of the border brought me a new collection, a lifetick or two and a few surprises!

Worth noting that 100 was mislabeled as Otus bakkamoena, something I already suspected from photos on FB of the animal in question; on examination of various textbooks, photographs taken by myself of true O.bakkamoena and consultation with staff at the collection, I was able to get the correct ID.

Has Singapore scops owl been split now? And has Lilith owlet? Neither of these have been changed on zootierliste and they're treated as subspecies in HBW.

I believe the Germans in charge of ZTL have chosen not to accept the split of these taxa - in the case of the Lilith Owlet they *have* added the species level name as a synonym to reflect the split, but have kept the subspecific name as the priority name.

The split of both taxa - along with a number of other splits - is discussed in the genetic and morphological analysis of a number of owl genera in the following volume:

König, C. & Weick, F. , Owls of the World: Second Edition (Christopher Helm, London 2008)

The resulting splits are also accepted in the main body of the handbook, a species-by-species account with diagrams of all known taxa at the time of publication.

The analysis performed for this book is also the basis for the following more up-to-date volume:

Mikkola, H., Owls of the World - A Photographic Guide: Second Edition (Christopher Helm, London 2013)

I believe that the split of Lilith Owlet in König & Weick only includes the former subspecies Athene noctua lilith, but that subsequent genetic and morphological research has led workers to include A. n. glaux and A. n. indigena as subspecies within Athene lilith too - for instance in Dutch Birding (vol. 31: 35-37, 2009), although they take Athene glaux as the specific name, with lilith being demoted to a subspecific name.

Worth noting that the signage at Scottish Owl Centre reflects the split, too.

I know shorts doesn't like to get involved with taxonomy but I'm leaving this one for him to decide on. To be fair if you were regarding these as taxonomic splits you should have done it from the start instead of listing Singapore scops as a subspecies in your original post from muncaster.

Fair enough :) as for your latter point, this would be because I only noticed the Singapore split when checking König & Weick (which I brought with me to SOC in case I came across anything which was unlabelled) to work out if it was nominate Sunda or Singapore which I was looking at, as the aviary was only marked as Otus lempji and I knew both were around in aviculture.

I did know about the Lilith split already, however - this was one reason I wanted to get to the collection, actually, along with the Black-Banded Owl and Buffy Fish Owl - the latter taxon has left the collection, unfortunately. Half-expected to bump into you two whilst there actually, as I didn't think you'd miss the chance to get Black-banded whilst in Scotland :p

I've updated Zootierliste to reflect what is on-display, incidentally.
