Bristol Zoo Project Next Steps?

Yes, you've missed something :)
'Central African Cheetah' is one of the names used for soemmeringii - and probably a better name than 'Northern Cheetah' since the real Northern form is hecki [Saharan Cheetah].

So it is. Remains to be seen though where the hecki / venaticus intergradation zone is or whether both are in the same cline.

Nice to see Bristol work with this very much rarer - even highly endangered - taxon!

Wild Place is further on the up and it seems the last few changes have made for more dynamism .., it seems to be increasingly too!!! :)

I have to ask do you know or not because if you do you know more than a friend of mine that works there!!!

Might it just be wishful thinking .. (on the part of the original poster)!

Admit it though …, the Wild Place is getting better with age! :)

Wild Place is a collection I have yet to visit. It's 200 or more miles from where I live, so I was waiting until it had a few more species to justify the long drive. I do subscribe to their e-newsletter though, and was surprised to read that the cheetahs have arrived "from Whipsnade Zoo in London".

Last time I visited Whipsnade Zoo it was still in Bedfordshire. I hadn't heard that the ZSL had relocated it!

I visited Wild Place today; they're in the process of building an extension to the walkthrough lemur area, in the patch of ground leading towards Wolf Wood. According to a poster they had displayed at the building site area, they're adding Black and White Ruffed Lemurs.

Seem to have been a few of us flocking there lately; yesterday myself, ophidia and zoogiraffe visited in the afternoon, at the same time as another Zoochatter called matthew also visited unknown to us!

How many places did you do in the day- two- or three? Cotswold as well?

Friday - CWP, Cotswold Falconry, Crocodiles of the World
Saturday - Weyhill Hawk Conservancy
Sunday - Bristol Zoo, Wildplace

I could see you'd all been busy from the new photos from these places popping up after the weekend.;)

Wild Place and Bristol Zoo are now offering a joint membership for £72 a year (adult).

One of the Zebra was euthanized Saturday due to terminal liver failure.

Belted Black-and-White Ruffed Lemur (Varecia variegata subcinta) arrived yesterday - they can be seen in their new house. The extension to the walkthrough is expected to be opened for May half term.

Excellent news :D I had rather hoped that they would go with the Belted Ruffed rather than the more commonplace Pied Ruffed!

Reposting with edits from the Bristol Zoo thread because I didn't know this one existed :D

So currently fundraising for a giraffe house to the tune of 750k which I think is great news. Personally I would like to know why they don't just use some of the 40m in the reserves, will surely pay for itself relatively quickly.

The sooner the better I say, hopefully some of my dual membership money has already gone towards this project. Assuming it's planned for some time in 2016, it makes renewing next year a formality.

Subjectively speaking of course as I have a young family to whom the addition of giraffes would appeal enormously.

You're making the classic mistake of thinking reserves equals cash, it doesn't. Reserves reflect profits made since year dot but the cash from those profits can be spent on items such as assets (enclosures) which would reduce cash but not reserves -i.e. it's completely possible to have high reserves and low cash if there's been a lot of spending on assets*. Sorry I can't be bothered to go into a convoluted accountancy lesson on a day off but, trust me, I'm right. :)

A quick review of Bristol's accounts show they only have a few hundred thousand in the bank, not millions, hence the appeal for cash.

*It'd be the very (simplified) equivalent of someone earning £200,000 (net) in a year but at the year-end having only £20,000 in the bank but having brought and retained a £140,000 house and £40,000 car -reserves/income £200,000, cash £20,000.

Thanks for the info, I stand corrected :D

In that case I fully support the public appeal and hope they raise the money they need before too long.
