Looking through the threads devoted to species on the verge of disappearing from the UK and species which have disappeared from the UK and were photographed by Zoochatters, it occurred to me that both threads contain quite a bit of input from Zoochatters throughout the rest of Europe, discussing losses and imminent losses from Europe as a whole.

As such I thought it might be interesting to more fully discuss the diversity of species which have disappeared from Europe as a whole within my lifetime, as well as those that have disappeared from the UK - hence this thread has been posted in the general Europe forums. Although I was born in 1987, and hence an accurate discussion would entail a 28-year span of discussion, for the purposes of this thread I will restrict myself to those species which have disappeared since 1990 - a quarter-century of loss.

My other aim in posting this thread is to hopefully lead people to upload photographs of any particularly unusual taxa which have been lost to the Zoochat gallery.

It will probably be easiest to go through the catalogue of losses by taxonomic group - as I have been doing rather a lot of reading about owl and bird of prey taxonomy over the past few months due to the ongoing UK Zoochat Challenge, I will arbitrarily start there :p
 
Owl taxa lost over the last 25 years:

African Grass Owl (Tyto capensis) - last held at Paradise Park Hayle in 2000, with individuals also held at Walsrode during this timespan. As far as I am aware, no photographs exist of this taxon on Zoochat at all.

Spotted Owlet (Athene brama) - although two listings remain on Zootierliste, I am not entirely sure that this taxon is still present at either. The last certain holding of the taxon was at Scottish Owl Centre a few years ago - the loss of this species is quite a shame when one considers that within the past 25 years it has been present at thirteen or fourteen collections, and bred well at many of these.



Asian Barred Owlet (Glaucidium cuculoides) - the last individual in Europe, at Muncaster WOT, died in 2010. Individuals were also held during this timespan at Vogelpark Niendorf and Tierpark Berlin. As far as I know, none of the photographs of this taxon on Zoochat are of individuals in European collections.

Least Pygmy Owl (Glaucidium minutissimum) - a small handful of individuals were held in European collections until the late 2000's, with some breeding occurring; I believe the last individual in Europe died at Antwerp in 2008. Neither photographs nor mention of this taxon exist on Zoochat at all, until this post.

Peruvian Pygmy Owl (Glaucidium peruanum) - the only holding of this taxon in Europe was a short-lived group at Veldhoven NOP, the last individual dying c.2012. Only one photograph of this taxon at Veldhoven is present on Zoochat:



Japanese Scops-owl (Otus semitorques) - the last holding of this taxon in Europe was at Weyhill Hawk Conservancy in the early 1990's; a breeding occurred in 1992 but I am unaware of when exactly the taxon left the collection. No mention nor photographs of this taxon exist on Zoochat.

Tawny-browed Owl (Pulsatrix koeniswaldiana) - the only known holding of this taxon in Europe was at Vogelpark Niendorf in the early 1990's; the only photographs of this taxon on Zoochat are of individuals held in South American collections.

Spotted Wood Owl (Strix seloputo) - the only known holding of this taxon in Europe was at Vogelpark Niendorf in the early 1990's; the only photographs of this taxon on Zoochat are of individuals held in Asian collections.

Fraser's Eagle-owl (Bubo poensis) - this taxon was held in a number of European collections during the time period in question, with some breeding occurring. The last collections to hold this taxon were Antwerp, until 2002, and Olmense Zoo, until 2012. However, despite the recent loss of this taxon and the number of collections that held it, no photographs of the taxon are present on Zoochat whatsoever, and this post is the first to even mention the taxon.

Nduk Eagle-owl (Bubo vosseleri) - this taxon was last held by London Zoo, which kept an individual from 1962 until 1997. Although discussed on a number of occasions on Zoochat, and seen by quite a few Zoochatters from what I understand, there are no photographs of this taxon on Zoochat whatsoever.

Shelley's Eagle-owl (Bubo shelleyi) - this taxon was last held by Antwerp, with the last individual dying in 1990. No discussion nor photographs of this individual nor taxon are present on Zoochat.

Blakiston's Fish-owl (Ketupa blakistoni) - the last known individual of this taxon in a European collection was at Leningradsky Zoopark until 2004. Only very minimal mention of this taxon has been made on Zoochat, with no photographs posted whatsoever.

Pel's Fishing-owl (Scotopelia peli) - the last known individual of this taxon in a European collection was at Paris Menagerie until 1999; however no mention of this taxon nor individual, or photographs of the taxon, are present on Zoochat.

Rufous Fishing-owl (Scotopelia ussheri) - the only holdings of this taxon in Europe were at London until 1990, and Chester until 1994; the individuals in question have been discussed on Zoochat on a few occasions but no photographs of the taxon have ever been posted to the site.

So - of those owl species to have disappeared from European collections within the last 25 years, some 14 in total, only one holding is represented by photographs within the Zoochat gallery. I am sure that some Zoochatters *must* have photographs of the taxa in question - especially the unusual Bubo and Scotopelia taxa!

Bird of Prey taxa lost over the past 25 years:

White-bellied Sea Eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster) - seemingly held in a number of European collections over the past 25 years, the last holding of the taxon seems to have been at Weyhill Hawk Conservancy sometime prior to 2012. However, there appear to be no photographs of any of the individuals held within Europe on Zoochat - the only images in the gallery are from Asian collections.

Changeable Hawk-eagle (Nisaetus cirrhatus) - held in a few collections within Europe in the recent past, however it appears both of the final collections to hold the taxon - Newent ICBP and the Raptor Foundation - have lost the species at some point in the last few years. The only photographs of this taxon on Zoochat are of individuals held in Asian collections.

Ornate Hawk-eagle (Spizaetus ornatus) - a small number of collections within Europe have held this taxon in the last 25 years, most recently Walsrode until 2003 - this collection bred the taxon, in point of fact. However, the only photographs on Zoochat of this taxon are from US collections.

Black Hawk-eagle (Spizaetus tyrannus) - this taxon was held at Tierpark Berlin until 2005. However, the only photographs of this taxon on Zoochat are from US collections.

Papuan Eagle (Harpyopsis novaeguineae) - this taxon was held at Antwerp until 1994; however the only mention or photographs of the taxon on Zoochat are from Asian collections.

Guianan Crested Eagle (Morphnus guianensis) - this taxon was held at Lisbon Zoo until 1994; however the only photographs of the species on Zoochat are from South American collections.

Pied Harrier (Circus melanoleucos) - the only individual of this taxon in Europe was held at Newent ICBP until the early 2010's. The only photographs of this taxon on Zoochat are from Asian collections, however.

Australian Black-shouldered Kite (Elanus axillaris) - the only individuals of this taxon in Europe were held at Zoo Berlin until 1994, the result of a customs seizure. However, no photographs of these individuals exist on Zoochat, and in point of fact the only photographs on Zoochat of this taxon are of wild birds.

Mauritius Kestrel (Falco punctatus) - ten collections within Europe have held this taxon during the past 25 years, the final holding being at Kirkleatham Owl Sanctuary in 2010; the fact that I failed to realise this fact when said collection is only 25 minutes away from me continues to be a source of annoyance :p fortunately, several photographs of the individuals held in European collections are present on Zoochat, such as the following:

As with owl taxa, there is a marked lack of photographs on Zoochat of those bird of prey taxa which are now absent from European collections. It is worth noting the above account is at species level - at subspecies level a lot more species have left European collections, but equally many taxa are still present in private aviculture and have, on occasion, come into public collections.

I think I have good news for you. Not only is there a photo of a captive specimen in the gallery, but around the time of taking this photo I had also heard that there were several (at least) in private hands.

It is quite striking to me that of the 40 species of hummingbird which have been lost in European collections over the last 25 years, only four are represented on the Zoochat gallery - especially when one considers that a number of these were present in regularly-visited collections, and present within the last 5-10 years in some cases.

Here, I suspect, there is scope for quite a few old photographs to be uploaded!

Interesting :) the collection where you took the above photograph is not represented on ZTL, hence my being unaware of it. In discussion with a keeper at the Scottish Owl Centre last week, he noted that he was not aware of any remaining in private hands - hopefully he was wrong, and they have not all died off over the course of the last few years.

Be nice if they *were* still around - they are quite an attractive species and although I have seen the taxon, I haven't taken any decent photographs of it as yet :p

And of course, this is part of the motive for posting this thread - to find photographs of these disappearing taxa, and give people a reason to upload any photographs they *do* have!

Actually there is photograph of the Antwerp (ex Edinburgh) specimen on ZooChat:



(Incidentally, on one of my visits to Antwerp many years ago, I was struggling to take photographs of this specimen through the aviary bars when a keeper kindly unlocked the aviary door and let me inside so I could get an unobstructed view! I must lookout my old slides of this eagle and load them onto ZooChat.)

I was sure I had seen photos on here by Tim May or gentle lemur or someone... but I think I am probably confusing my memory with Monkey-eating Eagle.

I imagine you are probably one of the best chances for a photo of the Nduk Eagle Owl and Rufous Fishing-Owl at London, too :p

Those are images of White-tailed Sea Eagle - a much more common taxon :) though one I rather like.

As noted above by Tim May, a user *has* uploaded a photo of the old Antwerp animal :)

It was at a temporary display in Lisbon, but all the animals there were owned by a larger exotic animal company (called 'Alves Pets').

Carnivoran taxa lost over the past 25 years:

Bushy-tailed Mongoose (Bdeogale crassicauda) - last held at Tiergarten Heidelberg in the mid-1990s. No photographs of this taxon are present on Zoochat.

Cape Gray Mongoose (Galerella pulverulenta) - last held at Karlsruhe in 1993. No photographs of this taxon are present on Zoochat.

Somali Dwarf Mongoose (Helogale hirtula) - last held at Paris Menagerie in 1996. No photographs of this taxon are present on Zoochat.

Small Asian Mongoose (Herpestes javanicus) - last held at Gdansk Oliwa in 1995. The only photographs of this taxon on Zoochat are of captive and wild individuals in Asia.

White-tailed Mongoose (Ichneumia albicauda) - unless one counts the holding at Sharjah in the UAE, the last holding of this taxon in Europe was Tiergarten Heidelberg in 2014. A single photograph of the individual in question has been posted to Zoochat:



Black-footed Cat (Felis nigripes) - approximately 18 European collections held this taxon within the last 25 years, the last of which was Port Lympne in 2014. As such, there are numerous images of this taxon in European collections posted into the Zoochat gallery, for instance this photograph of the final individual in Europe:



Pampas Cat (sensu lato) (Leopardus colocolo) - last held at Parco Faunistico La Torbiera in 1996. The only images of this taxon posted to the Zoochat gallery are of captive individuals in South America.

Marbled Cat (Pardofelis marmorata) - last held at Parco Faunistico La Torbiera in 1995. The only images of this taxon posted to the Zoochat gallery are of a taxidermy exhibit in Australia.

African Golden Cat (Profelis aurata) - last held at Port Lympne in 2000/2001. Although the final individual in Europe was seen by several Zoochatters, no photographs of this taxon have been posted to the Zoochat gallery barring images of a captive individual in Africa, and scanned photographs of an individual held at Zoo Berlin in 1899.

Gray Fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) - last held at Dartmoor Zoo in the early 2000's. Although seen by numerous Zoochatters here, at London Zoo and Kilverstone during the timespan in question, the only photographs of this taxon uploaded to the Zoochat gallery are of individuals in the USA, Mexico and South America.

Kit Fox (Vulpes macrotis) - last held at Burger's Zoo in 2005. The only images of this taxon on Zoochat are of captive individuals in the USA.

Lowland Olingo (Bassaricyon alleni) - last held at Kilverstone Zoo in 1992. No images of this taxon have been posted to Zoochat.

Northern Olingo (Bassaricyon gabbii) - last held at Kerzers Papiliorama in 2006, having previously been held at Wilhelma and Kilverstone during the timespan in question. However, no images of this taxon in a European collection have been posted to Zoochat - the only images of the taxon in the gallery are captive individuals in South American collections.

Molina`s Hog-nosed Skunk (Conepatus chinga) - last held at Barcelona in 2002. The only images of this taxon in the Zoochat gallery are of captive individuals in South American collections.

Eastern Hog-nosed Skunk (Conepatus leuconotus) - last held at Hannover in the early 2000's. The only images of this taxon in the Zoochat gallery are of a captive individual in the USA.

Cape Clawless Otter (Aonyx capensis) - last held at Frankfurt in 1993. The only images of this taxon in the Zoochat gallery are of captive individuals in the USA.

Hog Badger (sensu lato) (Arctonyx collaris) - last held at Thrigby Hall and Duisberg in 1992. The only images of this taxon in the Zoochat gallery are of captive and wild individuals in Asia.

Zorilla (Ictonyx striatus) - last held at Paradise Wildlife Park in 2010. Was present in approximately 10 European collections during the timespan in question, and photographs from various of these collections have been uploaded to the Zoochat gallery, for instance the following image of the final individual in Europe:



Fisher (Martes pennanti) - last held at Prague in 2004. The only images of this taxon in the Zoochat gallery are of wild and captive individuals in the USA.

Asian Badger (Meles leucurus) - last held at Kiev in 2007. The only images of this taxon in the Zoochat gallery are of individuals in Asian collections.

Chinese Ferret-badger (Melogale moschata) - last held at Prague in 2014. Images of the individuals in question have been uploaded to the Zoochat gallery, for instance:



Javan Ferret-badger (Melogale orientalis) - last held at Budapest in 2008. A single image of the individuals in question has been uploaded to the Zoochat gallery:



Mountain Weasel (Mustela altaica) - last held at Kaunas Zoo in the early 2010's. The only photograph of this taxon on Zoochat is of a wild individual in Asia.

Hooded Seal (Cystophora cristata) - last held at Skegness Natureland in 2013. This taxon occasionally pops up in European collections due to rescues of stranded animals, as the Skegness animal was, and as such a few photographs of the taxon have been posted to the Zoochat gallery. For instance, the following image is of the last individual to have been held in Europe:



Northern Elephant Seal (Mirounga angustirostris) - last held at Antibes Marineland in 1999. A single image of the last individual in Europe has been posted to the Zoochat gallery:



Southern Elephant Seal (Mirounga leonina) - last held at Zoo Berlin in 2000. A number of collections held this taxon during the timespan in question, and as such several photographs of individuals held within European collections have been uploaded to the Zoochat gallery, including this image of the final individual:

Caspian Seal (Pusa caspica) - last held at Budapest in 1992. No images of this taxon have been uploaded to the Zoochat gallery.

Baikal Seal (Pusa sibirica) - depending on how one defines the boundaries of Europe where Russia is concerned, this taxon is still held in one or two collections. However, the last "true" European holding was Leipzig in 2013 - something which as is well known annoys me, having visited Leipzig only months after the final individual passed away..... :p A number of European collections held this taxon during the timespan in question, and as such several images have been uploaded to the Zoochat gallery - including the following image of the final individual at Leipzig:

It is apparent that carnivoran taxa which have disappeared from Europe are slightly better represented in terms of photographs in the Zoochat gallery - however there are still a number of big "blind spots", such as the lack of any images of African Golden Cat, Marbled Cat, Grey Fox and Kit Fox! It is also apparent that pinnipeds seem more well-photographed than other carnivores......

It appears that Tomek has heeded my call, and has now uploaded a photograph he took of H. leucogaster in 2009.

are you going to be attempting to catalogue all the (at least) birds and mammals, or only select groups?

not completely relevant to the European theme of the thread, but in the interests of pedantry there is a photo of a melanistic Pampas Cat in the Cinicinnati Zoo gallery (or, more strictly speaking, a photo of the enclosure in which the cat can be seen).

I have a photo, I am sure, of another taxidermy Marbled Cat from Beijing but I appear not to have uploaded that photo.

I found TLD's excellent summaries as in Posts 13 & 14, with photos of individuals included where appropriate, very user-friendly to read. I hope he can follow on with other species such as Ungulates & Primates in this style.

I'll probably cover as much as I possibly can in terms of bird and mammals lost over the last 25 years in the long run, but I'll continue approaching it on a "select group" basis so as to hopefully maximise the chances of people having photographs to upload :)

That's the plan :) ideally I hope that eventually we'll get as many of the taxa currently lacking photographs dealt with as possible; even in terms of the three groups I have posted about thus far, there are quite a few species which have been held by ZSL London and which individuals such as yourself, Tim May, Gentle Lemur and Dassie Rat - to name but a few - would hopefully have photographed!

Needless to say, if anyone has taken photographs of a taxon that disappeared from Europe in the last 25 years, but the photographs are older than this, they are still desired :) for instance, if anyone took a photo of the Marbled Cat at Howletts (which died in 1989) or the Cape Clawless Otter at Chester (which died in the mid-1980s) this would be entirely welcome.

I seem to recall reading somewhere (or maybe TLD or someone else on the site told me) that, based on a photo of the animal in question, it doesn't seem like Cincinnati's last Pampas Cat was entirely pure... Or perhaps it was the Geoffroy's Cat that wasn't pure... I don't recall:p

I know this sort of derails the thread from the European theme but having done a quick Google search, it seems there are a few photos of the animal in question that were taken by members who I don't think ever uploaded them but don't seem to be active anymore.

Marsupial taxa lost over the past 25 years:

Bare-tailed Woolly Opossum (Caluromys philander) - last held at Krefeld in 2006. The only photographs of this taxon on Zoochat are of a captive individual in the USA.

Big-eared Opossum (Didelphis aurita) - last held at Kerzers Papiliorama in c.2006. The only photographs of this taxon on Zoochat are of a captive individual in South America.

Common Opossum (Didelphis marsupialis) - last held at Halle in 2011. The only photograph relating to this taxon on Zoochat is of a sign announcing the death of the aforementioned individual at Halle.

Virginia Opossum (Didelphis virginiana) - although ostensibly still held at Ree Park, as far as I know no-one has seen the taxon there in several years. Given the short lifespan of opossums, it is unlikely the species is still present. The last known holding of Virginia Opossum in Europe was at Jesperhus Feriepark in 2013. A small handful of photographs showing this taxon in European collections have been uploaded to the Zoochat gallery, including the following image from Folly Farm, the penultimate collection in Europe to hold the taxon:

Four-eyed Opossum (Philander opossum) - last held at Plzen in 2012. Images of the final individual in Europe have been uploaded to the Zoochat gallery:

Northern Common Cuscus (Phalanger orientalis) - last held at Lille in 1999. No photographs of this taxon are on Zoochat.

Leadbeater's Possum (Gymnobelideus leadbeateri) - last held at Poznan Nowe in 2000. A single image of one of the large breeding group held at ZSL London throughout the 1990s has been uploaded to the Zoochat gallery:

Mountain Pygmy Possum (Burramys parvus) - last held at Amazon World in 2001; this individual was, I believe, a customs seizure. The only image of this taxon on the Zoochat gallery is of a captive individual in Australia, although I am aware of at least one film photograph of the individual held in Europe in the collection of a Zoochatter.

Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat (Lasiorhinus latifrons) - last held at Rotterdam in 1990. The only photographs of this taxon in the Zoochat gallery are of captive individuals in North America and Australia.

Rufous Bettong (Aepyprymnus rufescens) - last held at Opel-zoo in the mid-1990s, with a handful of other holdings in the early 1990s. There are no photographs of this taxon on the Zoochat gallery.

Doria's Tree-kangaroo (Dendrolagus dorianus) - last held at Twycross in 1995; despite once being relatively common in European collections the only image of this taxon in the Zoochat gallery is of a captive group in Papua New Guinea.

Grizzled Tree-kangaroo (Dendrolagus inustus) - last held at Krefeld in 1992; the only image of this taxon in the Zoochat gallery is of a captive individual in the USA.

Grey Dorcopsis (Dorcopsis luctuosa) - last held at Zoo-Vivarium Darmstadt in the early 1990s. There are no images of this taxon in the Zoochat gallery.

Brown Dorcopsis (Dorcopsis muelleri) - a confusing case; Prague received what later transpired to be a combination of Brown and White-striped Dorcopsis in 2010, believing it to be a pure group of Brown Dorcopsis. The collection now holds only the White-striped, but it is unclear when exactly the true Brown Dorcopsis individuals passed away, or how many there were; however it appears at least one individual was still alive in 2011, as the following image which matches the appearance of this taxon is present in the Zoochat gallery:

Brush-tailed Rock Wallaby (Petrogale penicillata) - last held at South Lakes in 2007; despite once being relatively common in European collections the only images of this taxon in the Zoochat gallery are of individuals in Australia.

Quokka (Setonix brachyurus) - last held at Blackpool in the early 1990s. A single photograph of the final individuals in Europe has been posted to the Zoochat gallery:

Red-bellied Pademelon (Thylogale billardierii) - last held at Augsburg in 2004. No images of this taxon have been uploaded to the Zoochat gallery.

It is apparent, then, that quite a lot of marsupial diversity has been lost over the last 25 years - it is especially striking to note how many representatives of the Didelphidae have been lost, especially when one considers that the remaining taxa are only present in tiny dwindling amounts themselves. Hopefully some Zoochatters have photographs to share of some of these absent marsupials :)
