To be precise, previews start on 10/07/2015, which for the benefit of our international readers is Friday, 10th of July. Islands opens to all visitors on Monday, 13th July.11/07/2015

Sulawesi has been unlocked on the Islands blog.
Ideally, the first animals should be in residence already. Some hardy fishes will help to mature aquariums and filter systems. They can be replaced by the permanent residents a little while before the launch.

We try to have a look each time we go ( every 2 weeks or sooner) You can't see where they are up to has it's so big , you can only see so many buildings from either the road or inside the zoo itself ... The keepers themselves will know what they are doing when the time is right to be moved across and when it's safe ... obviously they will be moved across before and after the Zoo itself opens ... we are going on the 10th July , 3 weeks on Friday and can not wait

Obviously they haven't taken them down and put the new dates up which have been known for at least a few weeks
1.1 false gharial have been despatched from La ferme aux crocodiles in France for islands.

The leaflets will have been printed months ago in huge numbers. Hardly sensible or practical to pulp them and reprint.

No but would have been alot better if they had the overprinted with the new date,which would have been very possible to do!

just had a look on the fb page ... looks stunning , can't wait to see them
From what I've been reading, it seems that, for such a large developement, there will not be very many 'new' species added to the Chester collection. (compared to Leipzig for example.) Most of the 'Islands inhabitants' will be species moved from other parts of the Zoo?. Not a criticism, just a query/observation.

Some of the species are totally new to the Zoo, like the Crocs. Some are long term core residents, like the Sumatran Tigers and Orangs. Some have been resident in the core Zoo in the recent history, like the Bantang, but were bought in specifically in forward planning to be long term residents in Islands,
In the case of the Bantang i would suggest their profile is going to be raised as part of islands much higher than it was in the core zoo and same said for many of the residents.

The vast majority of new species will be reptiles/fish/amphibians/insects etc for the monsoon forest exhibit. Am sure I have read somewhere that almost 1,000 individual animals have been added to the collection for Islands ( although granted they are all very small!!)
Surely they will be bringing in new species to replace the species already at the zoo, which are moving to Islands.
(Please correct me if I'm wrong).
