24 little penguins from Australia go on display at Bronx Zoo

Updated Yesterday

NEW YORK (AP) — Two dozen members of the world's smallest penguin species have taken up residence at the Bronx Zoo.

The little penguins are also called blue penguins or fairy penguins. When fully grown, they are only about 13 inches tall and weigh 2 to 3 pounds.

All of the birds in the colony at the Bronx Zoo were hatched at the Taronga Zoo in Sydney, Australia and brought to the Bronx as part of a breeding program. In the wild, they are found in Australia and New Zealand.

They are the Bronx Zoo's first ever little penguins. Only three facilities in the U.S. currently have them.

Jim Breheny of the Wildlife Conservation Society says the little penguins are acclimating well to their new home and are "quite a sight to see."

Has there ever been any discussion of a meet up at the Bronx Zoo of all the Zoochat participants for whom it's our home zoo?

I would personally love to do that, but unfortunately I am a minor and restricted by visits due to parents and timing.

I wouldn't mind considering going to a meet-up but I am an unemployed minor and, while I do not need to rely on parent's for rides and what not, I am limited by my rapidly depleting funds:p

I do plan to go within the next few months however.

Have you considered getting a membership? Or do you have to be 18 to do that...

In the last week of June an the Sundays of August I am totally free.

I'd imagine you have to be 18 to get a membership but I do have one since my parents buy it yearly. At the end of the year I'll be ordering my own, though.

Not having a membership in my name is another obstacle for visiting often. Since it's my Dad's name on the card, I can't use it to get free admission...

I think my membership lets me get up to five people in, so if we could figure out a gate at which to meet, I could get a few other people in if that's the only issue. I take the subway up so usually enter at the Wild Asia gate, but the other gates are possible with some planning.

how come New York children get to have their own part of the zoo with giant anteaters, pudu and sloths while in New Zealand we don't even have them in our normal non-children zoos? That's just not fair. :p

:(

A short little video of the new exhibit:

Looks nice, hopefully the enclosures aren't as small as they appeared to be to me when I saw it a few months ago. The farmyard enclosures look a thousand times better which is great. Never been a part I was particularly interested but still nice to see the animals getting some space. I wonder if the ASCO actually have a pond in their enclosure now...

And from the looks of things the sloth is indeed a Linnaeus's Two-Toed.
