Rhino Survives Poacher Attack In South Africa

Is it usual for poachers to use tranquillisers? I would have though that it was easier and cheaper to just use a bullet.

Maybe they didn't have the right firearms to kill the rhino? Taking down such a large animal isn't easy, after all. I'm just speculating here.

Its a lot quieter to tranquilise and quicker compared to the firearms needed to bring down such a beast, probably cheaper too. There is no sentiment with these poachers believe me.

One white rhino every eight hours was killed within the last 12 months in S Africa alone.

in South Africa the rhino poachers typically do their hunting at night now because of the presence of guard patrols in the reserves. They use night-vision goggles and tranquiliser guns to try to avoid detection.

Yeah, I figured that was the case. Even with big guns, it's not easy to take down a rhino.
