Bristol Zoo (Closed) Bristol Zoo news 2015

Hopefully not the only UK breeding for the next 8 years........

Has no-one mentioned the strange new invertebrate addition yet? Can't post a link from my phone but they have a new South American centipede on show!

That might have something to do with the fact that its not an ABC animal or a cute and fluffy birth!!!!!!!!!

Bristol Zoo - Giant venomous centipede flies over from Antigua - in Bristo

(photo on the link too)

11 June 2015

We've just revealed the exciting adventure of one its new additions, a giant venomous centipede that travelled from Antigua, through customs, via a Bristolian’s dirty washing.

The Zoo believes the centipede, which has been named Curtley, to be a Peruvian giant centipede, which is among the largest species of centipede and toxic to humans.

Bristol resident Jennie Esler was staying in a house in English Harbour, a town in Antigua, when Curtley the centipede snuck inside her luggage. Jennie had no idea he was in her bag until he’d been in there for over 48 hours, after she’d been back in the UK for over 24 hours.

Jennie said: “I have no idea when he actually got in there, but I packed it up to leave on the Saturday morning, popped to the beach for a bit and then made our way up to the airport. We arrived home after an 8 hour flight at 9am on Sunday morning and went straight to sleep. By this point Curtley must've been in the bag for at least 20 hours but I didn't unpack that bag for another 24 hours.”

It wasn’t until Jennie began unpacking the last few items in her bag that she noticed him.

“At first I thought I was seeing things and then I peered inside and saw nothing but legs against the black fabric of the bag”, said Jenny, “He didn't actually run out, he was quite shy. I had to tip him out of the bag into the bathroom sink, as I didn't really know what he was at this point. I couldn't believe it when I saw him. How did he get there? I didn't know what to do so I called the RSPCA who advised me to ring the Zoo and the rest is history.”

Curtley now lives in Bristol Zoo’s Bug World exhibit.

But surely something that unusual with a great origin story would have generated some interest on here! :p
Besides that it has been reported in national media, someone should have posted it! ;) :p

And thanks Chlidonias for doing the link for me, living with a sh*t phone is taking some getting used too! :D

Look forward to hopefully seeing the centipede in question, down the line.

Antiguan born Curtley the Centipede is obviously an ABCC animal. I trust that the person who has to explain its name to a certain tall gentleman from Antigua will wear a helmet, a full set of pads and a reinforced box :)

Or perhaps no one was aware of it?

It was in the national press, on social media and reported on their own website. Pretty sure people on here would have seen it and I am amazed that it hasn't been mentioned before now.
Lesser stories get multiple mentions, this is pretty much unique! I don't think this a species many (any?) Of us will have seen before and warrants attention.

It certainly warrants attention. I for one only heard about it from your post. I struggle to believe that members of zoochat are only interested in the ABC animals.

So do I, hence the reason I can't believe it's not been mentioned. On the other hand the Aye-aye birth received a lot of (well deserved) attention and I expected something this unusual to have been picked up.
A lot of people report births of meerkats and rhino's, why not the arrival of a new species which has had a fair bit of media exposure?

I'd say there are probably a surprising amount of ZooChatters who are indeed mainly interested in ABCs. And overall I don't think inverts get the attention they deserve a lot of the time on here.

I for one find it very surprising that any zoo at all would even "take the trouble" to talk about a "creepy crawly"

It is ways surprising when someone reports a meerkat birth but your right, it does happen . Maybe I've miss-judged the average contributor.

the most attention is always given to ABC zoo inhabitants. SO many posts about tigers and elephants and polar bears! But to assure you that a lot of members are indeed interested in the less cuddly critters: http://www.zoochat.com/2/escape-abcs-94004/

Thanks! We do the best we can :)

Curtley is currently offshow as we are looking to develop a special enclosure for him; not only is he insanely fast he's also quite shy, so want to do something that shows him off to the best of his abilities without compromising welfare.
