Btw i noticed a mistake in the leopard plate of volume 1 .... ssp saxicolor ( persian leoprard) is smaller than ssp nimr ( arabian leopard ) ... While in real life the persian leopard is one of the biggest subspecies while the arabian subspecies is the smallest ...

Family Felidae (Cats) | Lynx Edicions

What do you think ? I wanna hear opinions from everyone

I don't think there is any suggestion that the individual animals on each plate are drawn to scale.

Just received an email from Lynx Edicions, Vol 5 of HMW is currently being printed and bound.

They are now seeking good quality photographic submissions for the next volume on Rodents and Lagomorphs. Deadline for submissions is the 31st August.

How long time did it take for you to recieve anyone of these books? I know the traveling time depends on where you are located in the world. However I thought it was strange that my book has not yet arrived. In fact my mum ordered the first volume almost a month ago, for my birthday. However it has yet not arrived! Is the book just late? Is it a mistake done by us? Or is it caused by the company? What do you think/believe/know? As my mum ordered the book directly from the publisher in question, Lynx.

if you think there is a problem, just contact Lynx and they will be able to tell you whether it has or hasn't been sent, or if there has been a mistake.

It took almost three months I think for my copies to arrive in New Zealand, via Switzerland and in a sack, which was rather unusual. But you wouldn't expect it to take anywhere near that long to just get to Norway. I agree with Chlidonias; contact Lynx to find out.

Sending books to the Netherlands normally takes 3 days. But they always send you a link when they have sent the books and the three days is the time from sending this link to receiving them...

Okay, so my book, the first volume of HMW arrived yesterday, one month and 4 days after the book was ordered. Good that it finally came though. My book also came via Switzerland in a sack.

I was blown away by the level of detail the text had, by the high quality images, and also by the share size and weigth of the book. However, I had hoped the text were less cursory, describing one and one species, instead of mixing the info about lots of species like the book does. That was a major drawback.

Book number five has just been sent, so I expect it in Switzerland by thursday this week, so other should not have to wait too long as well I guess...

There *are* individual species accounts in HMW!

Yes, I know there are individual species accounts in HMW. However, much of the text consists of descriptions where several species are included. This is done in favour of another (in my opinion better) aproach where all of the information of the species in question is collected in one species account. At least that is true for the first volume. I dont know about the other volumes.

I got the book as a birthday present. And since I am only 17 years old, and to a great extent dependent on my mum to get money, it will most likely take some years before (and if) I get the full set of books.

I should take my time to thoroughly read, learn off and enjoy the first volume though:)

I received an email yesterday to say my book had been sent, but it could take up to six weeks to arrive. And it always arrives in a plastic sack.

that used to be the case with Russian brides too, but they had to stop.

Odd - mine (my books, not brides) come straight from Lynx too and always just arrive in a very solid and custom-printed cardboard box. Looking forward to pouchy and eggy mammal goodness!

How long time did it take for you to recieve anyone of these books?

I know you received the book now, but there are two main factors in the arrival of books from Lynx (based on my experience with the handbook for birds and more recently the mammal handbook): Your location and when you place your order. The orders are sent out depending on when you ordered. For example, if you ordered the book on the first day the pre-publication offer was started, they'll send it to you early. If you only ordered near the end of the pre-publication offer, they'll only send it to you after all the orders made by people before you have been sent. Based on your earlier comment, your order was placed around the time where they were beginning to send out the many pre-ordered volume 5.

This is done in favour of another (in my opinion better) aproach where all of the information of the species in question is collected in one species account. At least that is true for the first volume. I dont know about the other volumes.

Much information, like general behaviors and evolution, would not really fit into each species' account, or each species account would be a long series of repeats making the overall book much larger. All the books follow a similar format, but each volume has had its strenghts and weaknesses. In my opinion the weakness of volume 1 was the inconsistency in the length of the species accounts, perhaps because the authors of each family didn't have an earlier volume to compare with (e.g. entire books have been written about the gray wolf, but its entry was shorter than that for the small Indian civet). However, I've found that the weaknesses of each volume were relatively minor compared to their strenghts, and overall it is a remarkable series of books.

Admittedly, I look more forward to the future volumes than any of the ones that already have been published. After all, it isn't that hard to locate some level of information for most larger and medium sized mammal species. Try doing the same with a random tropical bat or mouse where even getting information on something as basic as appearance (e.g. pelage color) can be difficult.
