Blacktoft Sands and Old Moor today - one new addition from each; the harriers were my first of this species in the UK.

177. Montagu's Harrier - Circus pygargus
178. Wood Sandpiper - Tringa glareola

UK-only list is now 159 - only one off last year's total.

Which did you see where, as Bkacktoft is a reserve I visit regularly(ish)?

Blacktoft was the harriers (though, coincidentally, it was where I got my Wood Sandpiper last year!) - I saw the female in the morning and had two short views of the male in the early afternoon, both from Singleton Hide. Didn't see the newly-fledged young. There's more info on the reserve website: https://www.rspb.org.uk/discoverand...eserves/guide/b/blacktoftsands/sightings.aspx

There were stacks of Marsh Harriers, Ruffs, Spotted Redshanks, Sedge Warblers and Brown Hares as well, among others.

Forgot to add another species of new bird I saw late last week:

143. Black tern Chlidonias niger

Since my last update, I have seen one new bird species and three new mammal species:

144. Common greenshank Tringa nebularia

18. Western barbastelle Barbastella barbastellus
19. Common noctule bat Nyctalus noctula
20. Leisler's bat Nyctalus leisleri

Coincidentally after DesertRhino150's post, I can now also add:

31. Leisler's Bat - Nyctalus leisleri

Been out counting a roost with the bat group - also had a few noctules and pipistrelles. Increased my life total of Leisler's Bat individuals by over 5000%. :D

Two more today after a slight detour on the way home.

221. Little bittern
222. Hobby

Car problems have caused me to fall behind a bit with birding and probably ruined my chances of getting to 300 this year however I have managed a few more

223. Tree pipit
224. Wood lark
225. Nightjar
226. Montagues harrier
227. Red-footed falcon

245 Black Tern - Chlidonias niger
246 Clay-colored Sparrow - Spizella pallida
247 Red-naped Sapsucker - Sphyrapicus nuchalis
248 American Redstart - Setophaga ruticilla

32 Richardson's Ground Squirrel - Spermophilus richardsonii
33 White-tailed Jackrabbit - Lepus townsendii

34 Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel - Callospermophilus lateralis

American Redstart was a misidentification.

248 Northern Waterthrush - Parkesia noveboracensis
249 Rufous Hummingbird - Selasphorus rufus
250 Olive-sided Flycatcher - Contopus cooperi
251 Townsend's Warbler - Setophaga townsendi
252 Black-backed Woodpecker - Picoides arcticus

35 American Black Bear - Ursus americanus
36 Mountain Goat - Oreamnos americanus
37 Hoary Marmot - Marmota caligata

38 North American River Otter - Lontra canadensis

Here is a consolidation of the 32 mammal species I've seen this year. I'm leaving out a bat in Texas and a vole or lemming in Alaska...couldn't identify either one. Texas was great but
I missed out on Pronghorn, Javelina, Nutria, and Feral Hogs in areas I've seen them before. A side trip for Elk and Bison was a no-go due to a family medical delay. Hoped to see Armidillos, Striped Skunk, Ringtail, and Grey Fox near the San Felipe Springs in Del Rio...but again...time prevented a proper stay. Fairly confident that Black Bears will be spotted and a trip to Seward in July and Denali in August might yet secure several Sea Mammals, along with Wolves, Marmonts, and Pikas. If I'm lucky. Appears Musk Ox are a no show for me this year. I trip to Connecticut and Maine this fall may provide Grey Squirrels, Woodchucks, Opossums, and Chipmunks. Fisher, Lynx, and River Otters...you never know. I might still get to 40 species this year...I was hoping for more. Here is what I've got so far:

1. Canadian Beaver
2. North American Porcupine
3. Muskrat
4. Northern Red-backed Vole
5. Fox Squirrel
6. American Red Squirrel
7. Texas Antelope Squirrel
8. Black-tailed Praire Dog
9. Arctic Ground Squirrel
10. California Ground Squirrel
11. Rock Squirrel
12. Mexican Ground Squirrel
13. Spotted Ground Squirrel
14. Snowshoe Hare
15. Desert Cottontail
16. Black-tailed Jackrabbit
17. Common Shrew
18. Striped Skunk
19. Northern Raccoon
20. Brown Bear
21. Arctic Fox
22. Red Fox
23. Coyote
24. Rocky Mountain Goat
25. Blackbuck
26. Dall Sheep
27. Aoudad
28. Mule Deer
29. Whitetail Deer
30. Axis Deer
31. Caribou
32. Moose

Working on birds next.

Through process of elimination based on color, geography, and visible tale:

33. Tundra Vole

244. European dipper

and a fish I have forgotten to add for 2 months now:

7. Roach

This was my first dipper I have seen in Switzerland and I have now seen dippers in 10 different countries throughout Europe...

Some more birds and one mammal from a weekend full of cheese in the Berner Oberland (Swiss Alps)

255. Lesser redpoll
256. Golden eagle
257. Water pipit
258. Yellow-billed chough
259. Nutcracker

Mammals

25. Alpine chamois

Maybe I will get some more mountain species within a few weeks, but in 4 weeks I will be in the land of 13 months of sunshine :)
