From the Studbook:

MUNICH 29 Jan 1988 025007 Birth
TENERIFE 4 Nov 1992 NONE Loan to
AMSTERDAM 13 Jun 2002 M02095 Loan to
BERLINZOO 21 Sep 2005 NONE Loan to

I suppose he lived in a bachelor group while at Tenerife.

I wonder how much the group has changed since his departure. Most of the males are old enough to have been there bar two. Is it possible he could be reintegrated do you think?

No way. He was moved from Loro Parque to Amsterdam because he was couldn`t be kept with the other males any longer.

When he didn`t sire any babys in Amsterdam - which is not surprising given his background (handraised and after that sent directly to an all-male group) - he was sent to Berlin Zoo. I think they would have exchanged him much earlier if placing him wouldn`t be so difficult. He could either go to a new bachelor group with very young males where he is the only adult gorilla or to a non-breeding group of older gorillas (though not very many of those exist in Europe).

I really hope for the sake of the Berlin troupe - that had a good breeding record in the past - a fine solution may be found and Berlin Zoo in cooperation with the EAZA/EEP program and BZ can regroup around a new and well to do silverback to restart a proper gorilla family.

Those are the only viable options for him really, apart from living solitary somewhere which is not a popular outcome.

They(Loro Parc males) have all got older and probably more solitary in outlook, though I think are still kept together. Reintegration would be next to impossible I think.

They have kept 13 gorillas so far, and I wasn't aware that one of them was a female.

Yes, originally there was a smaller enclosure as well as the larger one. The smaller one initially housed the pair Bondo(m) & Bianca(f). Bondo died, I think Bianca was sent to Nuremburg. They then knocked the wall down to make one single large outdoor area for males only.

SHIRA's [Zoo Frankfurt] baby, born on the 2nd July died 2 days ago.the cause is unknown at the moment as she is still carrying the body around.

Shira's first born TANDU died last year.

Second baby at Basel

Another baby has been born at Basel. The mother this time is Faddama(32) who has not had a baby in many years- since 1998 in fact- male Viatu, now the silverback at Frankfurt. Faddama is also descended from the original Basel group(mother;Quarta, grandparents;Stefi/Achilla) so a welcome continuation of this famous 'first family' line at Basel itself. (The other recent baby having as mother, Joas who is an incomer to the group as is father Mtonge.)

Congrats to Basel! It seems M'Tonge has thoroughly read his job description and does his best living up to it. :)

I think its a classic example of where bringing in a new male stimulates a fresh round of breeding, even among females that haven't bred for many years. Kisoro had been ailing for some time before his death but for some reason the older homebred females in the group had never bred with him anyway. I'm wondering if even Faddama's mother 'Quarta' might just breed again now, though she is probably too old.

According to the linked article, Kipenzi may become the group's new leader. Zoo director Richard Østerballe said, "With a little luck we can keep Samson's second oldest son Kipenzi as the new stud. He is in the fortunate position that he is not akin to the females of the troop." (Translated with Google and slightly edited by me.)

Samson's first-born son is Kidogo at Krefeld Zoo in Germany. Samson's progeny is featured in this chart, honouring the late silverback's life and his legacy.

I thought that they might do that.;) He is already 13 years old and it makes for an easy transition as he's(presumably)still in the group(or with some contact with it) already. Also his mother Salome/Sally has quite low representation with only one breeding daughter.

They could perhaps do with one or two younger females to balance the group better in due course.

Givskud

Its confirmed Givskud will keep young silverback 'Kipenzi' to replace his father 'Samson' as group leader. Evidently he has not been living in the group recently as he will have to be introduced to the females.

According to this news from the Zoo (sorry it's in Danish), Kipenzi has been gradually reintroduced to the group (after having been separated from them since late 2014), and it has gone well. He has even mated with old girl Nille.

Male 'Matadi' has left the Paignton Zoo bachelor group to head up a new breeding/male/female group at Howletts. He is the first male Gorilla to enter the Aspinall Parks from another Zoo source since their first breeding male 'Kisoro' came from Lincoln Park USA back in the early 1970's.
