Chester Zoo Islands - Opening and impressions

My Niece visited yesterday and all I can say is she won't be going back to the zoo in the future.

In fact she described it as having a Christmas Dinner without the Turkey, Vegetables & Gravy (I take it she meant just Potatoes) and she's a member and will not be renewing her membership as she feels she's been misinformed by the zoo.

Each to their own, but this seems to be a case of cutting off her nose to spite her face.

She's a member, so the visit and repeat visits (until her membership ends) cost her nothing in entrance fees and she's decided to boycott arguably the best zoo in the UK because a handful of species (from the truly vast number throughout the whole zoo) weren't on display where she hoped they would be?

Presumably she was happy to become a member when Islands didn't exist so her visit was probably not much different to the zoo she admired when she originally joined?

Yes, Islands has been mishandled but I think some people, definitely including you niece, are letting frustration cloud their sense of perspective. I'm sure a lots of UK (Zoochat) members here would love Chester to be their local zoo, with or without Islands (finished or unfinished).

Sorry can't stay out of this one...

Shorts do you know how old his niece is? If she is child then your comments are very crass.

Children drive Zoos without them I seriously doubt that any of them would be open. What's one of Chesters strategy with the marketing of Islands. Oh yeah that's right Molly!

That hopeful is me done!

Not exactly, do you?

Given the (fairly good) analogy she used and the references to her Adrian's made in the past I'm fairly certain she's an adult. Do you have any evidence to the contrary?

Shorts: The analogy to Christmas sounds very child like. What's my qualification for that? I have been in education for 15 years. Not saying she is but that was impression that I took. But I try not to make assumptions and make posts on my impressions of other people's comments.

I think people's blind devotion to Chester Zoo is clouding their assessment of Islands. When you stick your head in the sand everything you see is golden.

I knew there was something Adrian posted that implied she was an adult, found it (or maybe one of many).

"Last year my niece's partners car was attacked by a Barbary Sheep, but this is the risk you take when entering the park (or any park for that matter) Animals are dangerous so I have no sympathy with anyone who has the car damaged in a safari park."

So was your analogy assertion wrong or are you saying Adrian's niece makes child-like analogies?

Finally, do you want custard or cream with your humble pie?:p

Sorry had to respond to this as up till now I have pretty muck kept out of this, out of respect for me friends that work at Chester Zoo,but yes a have a great devotion to Chester just like many others on this site do!!What I will not do is bury my head in the sand when something goes wrong I see enough of that at work, the zoo has screwed up royally Islands should not have opened until it was nearly finished,by opening now as they have they have damaged the reputation of the best zoo in the UK,very badly by not taking the bull by the horns when they knew they were not even going to be close to the opening date, way back in February of this year which is when they should have started moving the animals into the project,or atleast that was what members were told in December last year at a members meeting by the PROJECT MANAGER MR SIMON MANN,but since that meeting it all seems to have gone very wrong, for what reason I do not know, but I will be i suspect not only at the AGM in September this year in demanding answer as to why this project has gone so wrong!!

Sorry for the confusion the niece I was talking about is 12 the one that sometimes uses my Members Name is 26 (I also have 3 nephews 7,11 & 28) I feel that the zoo have a great exhibit but have handled it badly and opened it too early

I need to put the oven on, it seems :D.

I still think she's cutting her nose off to spite her face though -then again, who's that rational at 12 (or any age for that matter)?

given Adrian's past and the regular inconsistencies in his stories, I'm fairly certain the niece(s) is/are himself.....

They are NOT me I have made stupid remarks in the past and don't blame you for thinking that but I will say it again they are not me.

Again the past is brought up to try and offend a member from a Moderator I will no longer be putting any other info into these forums as I have had enough of the constant baracking from moderators and other members.

The comment was just a joke (and a funny one). I doubt if any offence was meant and you will have to be a bit less sensitive. You should continue posting as you start some interesting topics and obviously enjoy contributing. I read most of your posts and regard you as one of the stalwarts here on Zoochat.

Interesting to note that the Zoos PR and Media manager left her post back in June to set up her own business. It appears that her role has not yet been filled, with the assistant manager the only point of contact on the website.

I wonder if this may be part of the reason the communication strategy about the opening of Islands has lacked clarity.

I do really hope that there is no lasting impact from the handling of this. I doubt there will be, but it is a good lesson for the zoo going forward. The last thing they can afford to do is lose the trust and respect of their members and visitors.
