Animals that live on Cuba

Cuba has always been my favourite country and I am wondering what animals live there apart from the Cuban crocodile
 
If you read spanish go to the website of revista cubazoo that is the journal of the zoologico nacional de cuba, which has alot of nice articles on cuban wildlife. At the Havana zoos there are exhibits for cuban crocodiles, cuban iguanas and cuban boas. The aviaries at the havana zoo were being renovated when i visited earlier this year but they have varoius native birds there, including a breeding group of cuban amazon parrots. various species of hutias on cuba. too. And the great question,does the ivory billed woodpecker still exist in the sierra maestra ?
 
There is a certain level of irony about the user who names themselves an "expert" asking such a question.

It's a bit hard to know about animals that live on the other side of the world and not many people generally talk about Cuban wildlife
 
By the way, Havana is a good city for animal fans. 2 zoos, 2 aquariums and 2 natural history museums.

No, it isn't :p the key is to read books and online articles, watch documentaries, and pay attention to more than just one's immediate surroundings.

For instance, Australia is on the other side of the world but without even thinking about it I could tell you about Numbat, Mountain Pygmy Possum, Wombat, Tiger Quoll, Dibbler, Kowari, Koala, Red Kangaroo, Swamp Wallaby, Red-bellied Pademelon, Sugar Glider, Feathertail Glider, Leadbetters Possum, Striped Possum, Yellow-footed Rock Wallaby, Wallaroo, Tasmanian Devil......... :p

I do not believe there are any Cuban Solenodon in captivity anywhere, and I do not imagine this will ever change given the tenuous grasp on survival which this taxon possesses.

As of a few years ago there *were* three male Hispaniolan Solenodon kept at the National Zoo in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, but given the brief lifespan of insectivores I do not know if this is still the case.
 
The only cuban solenodon I saw was mounted at the Natural History museum of the Universidad de la Habana. my camera batteries were dead, unfortunately.

Land Animals of Cuba says Cuba has 16 endemic species of mammals, 23 birds, 82 reptiles and 42 amphibians.
Endemic species include: Bee Hummingbird (Calypte helenae); Cuban Parakeet (Aratinga euops); Cuban Hutia (Capromys pilorides); Cuban Treefrog (Osteopilus septentrionalis) and Monte Iberia Dwarf Eleuth (Eleutherodactylus iberia).
Animals and Plants Unique to Cuba has a fuller list of species.
