TV Series you are into

Marco Polo - I'm not sure what to rate this. It's a big-budget ($90m) Netflix original that they say you'll enjoy if you like the sex of 'Game of Thrones', and the history of 'Rome'. I watched one episode thus far and wasn't compelled to watch another episode. Perhaps it gets better later on down the track. One point to note is that I remember Chlidonias saying some years ago that Mongolian women were the hottest that he'd ever seen during his travels. If some of the women in this series are Mongolian, then I'm inclined to agree.

Fringe - A friend loaned me the BluRay but I haven't watched an episode yet. I know it's a JJ Abrams production, but I don't think I even heard of this series before. Is it any good?

Close to finishing Prison Break (very good highly recommend it along with the office us) and was thinking of giving Narcos a try. Is it any good?

Well it took more than two months to watch all five seasons - man, what a journey! You have a few years to watch it before it starts to look dated with the big cell phones and computers, so get cracking! Fringe is like a cross between X-Files and LOST, so if you liked either, then you will enjoy this series.

After Fringe, I watched a series on Netflix called 'Black Mirror'. It's an anthology series that reminds me of The Twilight Zone. The series takes you to some very dark corners of human psyche and its intersection with technology. The tech showcased is very impressive, but note that after watching each episode, you feel to slit your wrists, because there are no happy endings. Oh, and don't watch the first episode (with the Prime Minister and the pig) first, because it's actually the worst episode.

Another series I just finished watching, is the first season of 'Tyrant'. If you enjoyed the movie 'The Devil's Double' (about Saddam Hussein's psychopatic son), then you will enjoy this. It's a drama set in a fictional Middle Eastern country that's run by a dictator and his family. If you know your history, then you will see many influences of real events in the series - from the way the tyrant dresses and speaks, to the statue in the square that looks just like the statue of Saddam that was torn down, to a citizen setting themselves on fire in protest (like what triggered the Tunisian revolution) etc. I give it 9/10.

I watched the first three seasons of 'Continuum' on Netflix. Remember the hot readhead from the GI Joe movie? She is the lead actress in this TV series, where she plays a cop who has been transported back to our time from 2077. It's a very good Canadian series, set in Vancouver. If you enjoyed 'Fringe' and you like a healthy dose of time travel and paradoxes, then you will enjoy this series. I'm looking forward to the fourth and final season to be available soon.

I quite happily pay $2.50 to stream each episode of 'The Walking Dead', so I didn't mind giving the new companion series 'Fear The Walking Dead' a try. I watched the first two episodes, and all I can say is "can I have my $5 back please?". It's really really slow, the families are seriously dysfunctional, and the zombies are few and far between thus far. I don't think that I'll watch any more for a while.

The Walking Dead is one of my favorite shows but I don't I even made it past the first episode of Fear The Walking Dead:p

Even the 30-second per part mini narrative about a plane flying from LA to Phoenix is more exciting!

How The Simpsons gets renewed year in year out boggles the mind. A shame about Heroes Reborn - I haven't seen it yet though. I'm looking forward to The Blacklist and Person of Interest.

There are a few rival streaming services in Australia, and I decided to get a 1mth free trial from one of them (Stan). The data usage is twice as much as Netflix for 75% of the audio visual quality, so I will not be getting a subscription.

Remember the Evil Dead movies? Well it turns out that there is a TV series continuation with the same main actor. I watched just one episode, but it wasn't to my liking.

I am currently watching a series from 2004 onwards called 'The 4400'. It's a drama about 4,400 people who we 'abducted' (by aliens perhaps?) over the last 70 years, and who were all returned at once in 2004. The show follows some of their stories as they try to reintegrate into society with special gifts. It's worth a watch if you like sci fi, drama, and suspense, just don't laugh at the flip phones.

I watched two episodes of Jessica Jones on Netflix and realised that it wasn't for me. Too slow, too brooding.

And finally, remember Xerxes from the 300 movies? He is a Brazilian actor, who I only recently found out, played 'Paulo' on the TV series LOST. That reminded me that the hated 'Nikki and Paulo' episode was the only episode of LOST that I never watched (I fell asleep when it screened a decade ago), so I decided to watch it on Netflix. I enjoyed it because it felt like a standalone episode where I didn't really need to remember the LOST mythology. I do understand why they were the most hated characters though...

Oh, how could I forget about Scream? Remember the Scream movies from the 90s? Well the masked slasher is back... sort of. It's a trendy, modern reboot of the Scream franchise, which, like the movies, doesn't take itself too seriously. In the first episode a character points out that we like slasher movies because within two hours the find the killer and the cheerleader sits on the back of an ambulance with a bandaged knee, so that wouldn't work for a TV series. Instead, as he pointed out, we were treated to a mix of adult/high-school soap opera with some red herrings and a healthy dose of blood and gore. It's fun, and worth a Netflix binge, but be warned, that you will crave seeing season 2 in a few weeks.

So what have I watched recently? Hmmm... Oh, I have a three month free trial of another streaming Aussie service called 'Presto' Horrible user interface, but there are a few good shows.

Oh, I'm watching 'The X-Files' (the new 'season') on TV as it airs, and loving it!

I watched 'American Horror Story Freakshow' - that was great.

I watched two episodes of 'Mr Robot' and that was enough for me - too slow.

I'm pretty sure there are a few other shows I watched recently. I clearly need to keep a list.

The Good Wife has been officially cancelled, but Law & Order: SVU has been renewed.

The Simpsons needs to die already, the ratings these days aren't even very good so I'm not sure how it's managed to hang on. I've heard that merchandise is the reason it's still around, Simpsons merchandise makes a lot of money and if the show is still running, the merchandise sells better. I suspect that FOX might wait until the 30th season or so to cancel, so they have bragging rights, maybe try and make the finale a big event or something. I just want it to die soon, it's a mockery of the greatness the name once represented.

In the last few days there have been a few series officially renewed for another season:
  • Grey's Anatomy
  • How To Get Away With Murder
  • Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
  • Modern Family
  • Once Upon a Time
  • Quantico
  • Scandal
  • Blue Bloods, and
  • NCIS has been renewed for the next two seasons (Seasons 14 & 15) despite one of the original characters leaving the series.
