Mixed species exhibits #2

The Los Angeles Zoo currently exhibits:

I know this is an old thread but was wondering if anyone knows of any successful mixed species exhibits with Hamadryas Baboons? I have read about exhibits at South Lakes with giraffe and white rhino as well as with elephants at Safari Beekse Bergen. Any others? Have they ever been mixed with Somali wild ass?

Also, anyone ever seen Olive Baboons mixed with Scimitar Horned Oryx or Addax?

Any successful mixed exhibits with black rhino and a baboon species?

Drew, Port Lympne or Howletts mix Guinea(?) Baboons with black rhino in at least one of the rhino paddocks! I think Knowsley have their baboons mixed with zebras but I think the origins of the baboons are lost in the midsts of time and can be best described as just baboons!

Not that I've heard but I think they use rhino's with a better disposition than average; the baboons have/had a seperate enclosure as well so I don't know if it's a constant mix or not.
 
A friend of mine told me yesterday : " There is any mixed exhibit with okapis and mandrills?"
"In USA maybe?"

None in the US. Most okapi are not kept in mixed species save with things like duikers or birds.
 
There's a mixed exhibit in France of okapi, Hamlyn's monkeys and a lot of birds in a netted aviary! It's at Doue La Fontaine and the Rotterdam exhibit is a scaled down version with no primates.

As mentioned above smaller arboreal monkeys have been done with okapi. I can't imagine anyone trying okapi with mandrill. Okapis are easily stressed and mandrills (especially adult males) can be fairly aggressive. When mixes have been tried they've been known to pick fights with things like forest buffalo, which are very capable of defending themselves. I can only imagine the result if that happened to an okapi.

Indian rhino and blackbuck have been done but do require space. The stork could presumably be done too but there is always a risk of trampling when displaying clipped-winged birds with larger mammals. There's also the general discussion of the use of clipped-winged birds.

Chester keep Indian rhinos with herds of blackbuck and brow-antlered deer. The enclosure is quite large and a small section is separated by a strong fence with narrow gaps to provide a refuge for the deer and antelopes.

What do you guys think of the following mixed exhibits:

Bighorn sheep and Pronghorn?
Bighorn sheep/Pronghorn and quail/other small birds - risk of trampling?
American Badger and Common Porcupine - theoretically would utilize different parts of the exhibit?
Can North American River Otter be mixed with anything? Possibly American Beaver? Or would they be too aggressive?
 
Given how predatory otters can be with any smaller animals I would not like to use them in a mixed exhibit. Even more so American Badger - they are far more carnivorous than Eurasian Badger. The sheep/pronghorn might work - depends on the size of the exhibit, but I do not know how aggressive a Bighorn ram might get during the rut - females might mix better

Thank you, you confirmed a lot of my thoughts lol. I will probably be in this thread a lot in the coming weeks (if there is a better thread to ask then let me know). I found a zoo I designed a couple years ago and I'm redesigning it, which includes merging (or getting rid of) lots of exhibits. I wish there was one place to go to find out all the mixed exhibits that have been tried before!

Smaller birds can be mixed with ungulates in large indoor exhibits, as done in the desert hall at Burgers' zoo. It wouldn't work outdoors, as it would require clipped wings. One thing is the risk of trampling, but pinioned small birds like quail would rapidly be attacked and eaten by wild crows, magpies, hawks, gulls, etc.

Mixed species......

Attempts have been made to mix Lions with Meerkats and with Alexandrine Parrakeets. The Lions always eat the other stuff. No-brainer really.
