The focus seems to be on improving many of the existing exhibits, including; "orang-utans, giraffes, tigers, snow leopards" which is very good to hear.

In other news the Carpathian lynx twins, born in May, are two males. They have been named Dante and Dakota and were born to parents Daisy and Dave, who had triplets last year called Dick, Dom and Daphne!

Worth noting that the new man at the helm is Derek Grove, a long-standing keeper at Dudley if I recall correctly.
 
Not a great exhibit for the species but they seem to do well so must be very content with the exhibit wonder if they will put the lions back in their old enclosure where they also bred very successfully for many years.

"Dick and Daphne are being collected today to go to Heathrow Airport and Dom will be going at the end of next month.

Daphne will be flying to Zurich Airport and will then be collected by staff from her new home, Wildpark Peter und Paul, St Gallen, Switzerland.

Dick will be flying to Paris and is then going on to Espace Animalier de la Haute Touche in Obterre in the Loire Valley.

And Dom will be on his way to Hungary at the end of September when he will fly out to Budapest before reaching Pécs Zoo".


I never thought when Dudley built the new lynx exhibit and started holding Carpathian lynx for the first time, back in 2012, that it would be such a huge success.

And long may such success with the taxon continue; I've always had a sneaking fondness for the Carpathian Lynx in preference to the nominate subspecies.
 
Sad news, I'll always remember seeing him as a kid, correcting my mum when she said he was a warthog like the little smart arse I was.
 
Very surprised and saddened to hear of this. Especially after I saw and photographed him, looking like an animal half his age, just a few weeks ago.

This now leaves a relatively large space unoccupied as the adjacent former cassowary exhibit has been empty for a while. Will they merge the two to create one large lush enclosure for a new species, or will they give them to the tapirs to churn up?
 
It's a real shame, he's been around longer than I can remember.

I do wonder what they will do with the space. Combined with the former cassowary area it would be a fairly large bit of real estate for Dudley.

Before going crazy speculating on new animals they can bring in, which animals that they currently have that could use the enclosure as is?

I'm sure the Grey Kangaroos would appreciate more space and the grazing. If the Demoiselle crane are pinioned they would probably do well too. The BNC have cranes in similar enclosures.
 
Nicks Sad Passing

The first time I went to the zoo I was what seven and my cousin saw nick and said what a ugly thing and too be fair he was now i'm 14 and saw him on my last visit in July. He was always a big part on my DZG visits, he was just fun to watch. But I can't wait to see what happens with his enclosure: D
 
New additions to the reptile house

Five juvenile dart frogs and three female tokay geckos are settling into the reptile house at DZG. The dart frogs came from West Midland Safari Park and the geckos from Knowsley Safari Park. The article also mentions that they are in the process of replacing all the artificial plants in the reptile house with real ones which, I'm sure, will look a lot better.

Dick and Daphne, two of last year's Carpathian lynx triplets, have arrived safely at their new homes in Europe.
 
A large new steel gate, featuring Dudley's tiger logo, has been installed next to the entrance. It is surrounded by newly installed metal grass fencing.
As well as this, the vastly improved car park will include life-size steel sculptures of a giraffe, orang, tiger, sea lion and crocodile, to be installed at the end of the month, that will lead people into the zoo.

To my knowledge she may well be the oldest in the world :)

I have to admit that when I initially spotted her name in your post I immediately assumed she had popped her clogs.......

I expected that as well! Before opening the thread though I assumed it was either bad news about Bart or Inca, thank God I was wrong! :)
 
Bart's the oldest Geoffroy's Cat in the world too :p and before he popped his clogs, Nick was the oldest Babirusa in the world...... Dudley obviously are putting something in the water!
