Howletts Wild Animal Park Howletts Wild Animal Park News 2015

7! And 4 of them are 6+ years old, which means they are either already fertile or should reach sexual maturity soon. It`s high time that he leaves.
I guess he will go to Cabarceno. They have a lot of young females that need an unrelated, proven bull, so that`s really good news.

What is Howletts' capacity for elephants? Even with the UK's largest enclosure, surely they can't have many more calves any time soon.
When are the young bulls going to be moving on? IIRC they're not nearing maturity yet.

Cabarceno has 2 young bulls who were born there and are related to most of their young females: Coco (15 years) and Yambo (11 years old). I guess Howletts will recieve one of them in exchange with Jums.
Interesting detail: Cabarceno also has another young male, 17 year old Jumar, who is originally from Howletts and a son of Jums. So Jums and Jumar will see each other again after living apart for 10 years. It seems Jumar is not yet dominant enough to breed with the females.

Howletts capacity is limited by the barn space. The barns are rather small and basic and need to be updated.

Thanks for the extra info. I did realise that it needed to be done but I shall miss seeing the big fella. Good excuse for a trip to Spain in the future perhaps.

Suprised they havent done this sooner, but it's practically 5 Star compared to the elephant accommodation at Port Lympne! The barns look like old shipping freight containers, or is this actually what they were?

Can anyone fill in the gaps of Howletts breeding bulls between Bwana and Jums please?

Coco arrived from Caberceno earlier this week - he was out on the hardstand yesterday

Was just looking at recent pix of Jums at Cabarceno. He is walking around following a cow- doesn't look very stressed to me... And a noticeable colour difference too, he is grey, while the Carbaceno elephants are more reddy-coloured from their soil-type.

Hey guys,

I was just wondering if anyone has been to Howletts lately? I'm just wondering as according to their website they have a baby black rhino which would be a first for Howletts. Yet they haven't announced it anywhere else :S

I can't find any further details on the new baby black rhino, just a photo on the zoo's Facebook page.

There is more information now on the above and on their main site, on this rhino calf at Howletts, their first. It doesn't say which female is the mother though.

A line explaining that the other 34 were born at their 'sister' Park at PL would not have come amiss-readers might understandably be left confused after reading that this is the first rhino born at Howletts but 'that the Foundation has bred 35 in total'.

Undeniably a huge achievement. I just wish they could for once avoid the obligatory swipe at other zoos, however valid it is, particularly as they do work with them with Black Rhino exchanges/transfers.

The grizzled leaf monkeys have all been taken back to Java for release. There are none left anywhere in captivity.
