The only collection in the UK that you can see a.....

Going back to zoogiraffe's original entry, Colchester isn't the only zoo with a Southern tamandua – London Zoo has one, and she has often been mentioned on this site.

I'm going to Colchester zoo soon – never been before – I shall take your list and see if I can spot everything mentioned! Anything else there I really shouldn't miss? (I don't like primates much, though...)

If you're not keen on primates & avoid those areas, there are a few things you could miss. The latest map is not great so wont help you much!

Slender snouted crocodiles in the entrance to Chimp world
Binturong mixed with the Langurs & short clawed otters by the lemur bridge
Tamandua aren't on map but are opposite sloths in the Worlds apart walkthrough
Black backed Jackal can usually only be viewed from road train, but can be seen from the Hunting dog viewing area (left side) if you're lucky.

Most of the other rarities are on the map, but even for a non primate person i would suggest looking at the bearded sakis on opposite side of path to sealions marked as squirrel monkeys (4) on the map

Although Colchester doesn't have many unique to the UK primate species, several are pretty rare.

forgot the feathertail gliders in farm building by the wild about animals theatre, tenrecs were in that building too a while back but not sure they're still there

Thanks, Pipaluk, that's very helpful and I will look for the bearded sakis too, as you recommend them!

Orangutan(no subspecies-status) (Pongo pygmaeus)

Does a hybrid count?

According to Zoolister, Edinburgh is the only place in the Uk you can find:

Central common chimpanzee (Black-faced chimpanzee) (Pan troglodytes troglodytes)

Well it is the only place in the UK that you can now see a hybrid Orang so it counts for me!

I'll do the obvious:

Pandas at edinburgh ;)

Polar bears at HWP. Am I right in thinking that their new musk oxen are unique too.

I do wish Whipsnade would give serious consideration to going in for Musk Ox again. They've kept them in the past, though I can't say how successfully. But very recently Whipsnade completed a new development called "Wild Wild Whipsnade, consisting of several disparate exhibits in broadly the same area, displaying animals that used to roam wild in Britain but are extinct here now (in the case of the wild boar, of course, they're back with us as a wild species after too long an absence, which is really good news). Musk Ox would fit in well there, as the species was to be found in Britain in prehistoric times.

I was looking at Zootierliste the other day for muntjac, and it says Beale is the only collection with Indian (common) muntjac. Is that correct? (I know most collections there have Reeves' because they are easy to get).

I'd be interested to know if anyone can confirm these are actually Indian and not Reeves'. I'm still not certain I trust Barcelona's ID of theirs.

Central common chimpanzee (Black-faced chimpanzee) (Pan troglodytes troglodytes)

Its the only place that has a recognised/proven group of this subspecies. But there could still be a few other older wildcaught individuals around elsewhere which have never been DNA tested- so you might be looking at one somewhere without knowing it.;)

Thought this thread could do with a little update :) just mammals, with private or largely closed collections such as Heythrop and WHF disregarded. Any taxa which are the only ones in Europe are in italics.

Now that is good news, I was stunned to see HWP as the lone holder.

Exmoor also hold Southern bald ibis and Buff-necked ibis i think these are the only ones on display in the UK. Oh and of course a 2015 hatched palm nut vulture if that counts?

NORTH ANSTON TROPICAL HOUSE

Western Pygmy Marmoset (Cebuella pygmaea pygmaea)

.......

Thank you for this very interesting update.

They also have the only Asian Garden Dormouse (Eliomys melanurus), which aren't listed on zootierliste for anywhere in the UK (including North Anston; coincidentally I've actually seen this species in two collections this year, one bring private).

Yeah, my list was only for mammals, as a comprehensive bird list would have been a bit more time-consuming to write! :p

I sure I have seen somewhere that Axe Valley have Amur Leopard Cat,I could be wrong!

Also worth noting that at present the Genet at Hoo Farm is off-show!
