ZSL London Zoo ZSL London Zoo News 2015

So Effie has given birth, great news! :)

And it's a boy!

Anyone know the sexes of Effie's previous infants?

Her first was a female called Djambala who still lives at her place of birth, Zoo Berlin

Her second was Makoua who was another female who now lives at the Burgers' Zoo

Great news about the birth!!

What a superb picture of Mum and baby, let's hope everything stays OK

It certainly is a nice picture and shows she has good maternal instinct, lets hope she does not have any problems with feeding this time around. Its a settled group nowadays so she has every chance of success, I would think.

With two offspring to his credit, Kumbuka has definately proved the doubters of his breeding potential(including myself:o) quite wrong. :)

So how genetically important is Kumbuka, and his respective offspring, to the breeding program?

On his mother's side, not at all, as they are of the very well represented Basel/Jersey line. But his wildcaught father Keke(deceased) had only two surviving offspring(the other being male Nasibu in Lisbon who currently has only one offspring) so he's important on that side. Overall I think the settled group in London now with two babies, is a huge achievement for them after all the bad luck of the past years, and perhaps an even more important factor than the genetics.

More births... the female African hunting dog has given birth to nine or possibly ten puppies. They've been hidden away in the den for some weeks (keepers are being very hands-off) but have now started to emerge. A regular visitor did get a few blurry pictures but I haven't seen any other evidence. Last time I looked there was extra fencing around the enclosure to keep visitors back a bit and give them some peace.

Gorilla kingdom was open to the public yesterday just from 11.00 to 3.00 (though school groups excluded). Mjukuu and Effie were sitting close together with their babies, Kumbuka nearby, and all looked very relaxed.

Both tamanduas are now at large in the rainforest as long as they are manageable and there aren't too many visitors. The two new bush baby babies are very visible and active with their mum in an (unlabelled) enclosure opposite the bats.

I received a Fellows Newsletter email about this yesterday- probably the less I say on this subject the better!

As did I.

Had wondered if they'd seen sense and scrapped the idea-evidently not.

I honestly don't know how this is going to sit within the exhibit or how much space it's taking up. More than I feared by the looks of it!

The overnight units do not appear to be 'in amongst the lions' as the publicity claims . I thought the plan was that they would be in the former Tiger enclosure .

I'm sure they will be where the old tiger enclosure was. What makes you think not, Bele?

Sorry Volvox , I did not make myself clear . I meant that the publicity suggested the lodges would be in the new lion enclosure , whereas they will be close ( in the old Tiger enclosure ) but not in with the lions .

They'll be adjacent. Close enough to find the roaring pretty thrilling, I imagine!

With the best will in the world, this is a stupid idea. If you're going to have people in the zoo overnight (staff excepted) then surely to goodness it's done on the edge of the zoo site to minimise any disturbance.

TBH, I don't think it's possible to put overnight lodges in anywhere at London without causing issues. And it seems doubly daft when a better thought out development at Whipsnade would probably cost less and could be built to have more guests.

Sometimes it's hard to avoid the feeling that the marketing department have taken over London Zoo.
