Marwell Wildlife Marwell Zoo News 2016

Ah ok, thanks for the clarification. In terms of Anoa, I meant in the Life in the Trees exhibit.

As for the new carnivore enclosure, I'm wondering if it could do with tigers, as on some fundraising publicity I was looking at on Friday it noted that a certain amount could fund a new tiger house, not sure if that was just an example or something in the works?

I have also seen this!!

Yes, there are many irons in the fire, many things need to be replaced, I grant you that!
But the money is there to do these things, but the management have not said it will all be done in a time period, because it they did and it wasn't done, then certain people will moan!

New biomass digester's, solar panels and heating systems will need to be built for the new tropical house, hippo house and so on.

It is NOT another merekat enclosure!

'an existing enclosure will be made larger, but it will be a new enclosure as the existing enclosure is now well past its original design life'

remedial works started but have had to be stopped due to the weather conditions. TPO's will need to be removed and you just don't remove them, but the work carried out was within the TPO remit.

TPO? The present occupants?

TPO, Tree Preservation Order

and yes, the existing inhabitants will need to be moved, which would be easier when there is only one of them.

Now have a guess which species or ... just tell them what species is under consideration (unless you are not allowed to spill ... as confidential ... and thus should not have posted / spilled it here ...).

BTW: I am prepared to wait when and if officially announced!

You could be waiting a long time for an official announcement knowing what Marwells PR is like!!

Well, there are only three large carnivore species at the collection, so I hope that narrowed it down a little for you ;)

I found it such a damn difficult catch, that I am still killing myself over it which it is (but nope ...)! :D

Although I can't see why on earth any of the big cats need a new enclosure, I would guess Amur Leopard, due to the mention of the tree preservation order & the fact that one is leaving soon.

You can't see why the Amur Leopards would need a new enclosure?

The trees grow through the wire roof which is presenting a 'few' issues, the trees in that area are now rooting from the inside and with every storm more and more branches get knocked off.

If a tree came down, then you'd all complain that not enough maintenance was done and it wouldn't make good reading if a tree came down while the park was open and a leopard got out.

The design life of the enclosure has been exceeded, and I'm sure that you would agree that both sides of the enclosure require improvements.

While you are indeed correct, one leopard is leaving the collection, the isn't enough 'off show' storage for two cats. Although they could go to another collection - I know of one collection that will be loosing their amurs this year, so they could go there. But the enclosure isn't going to happen soon as they are putting the amur leopards back together - the EEP require more cubs from this pair.

A new tiger house 'maybe' in the pipeline also.

Sorry, but how old is the enclosure? Not very old, so I would suggest that if its design life has been exceeded then it wasn't well designed! In a zoo the size of Marwell, why build it where trees grow through the roof? I hope the New one will be built elsewhere & the current enclosure used for another animal rather than smashed down in typical Marwell fashion!!

You can only learn by rectifying past "mistakes" or design "flaws".

I for one am glad something is now done about it and the occassion is celebrated to improve the entire housing of the big cat species at Marwell Wildlife!

It was an expensive ' mistake' to build it where they did. I know it's where the leopards have always been, but if they had sited it somewhere else ( please no-one try & say there wasn't space!), they could have built an enclosure that would have lasted 2 or 3 Times longer!

As usual, we will have to agree to disagree on priorities.
At worst the big cat enclosures could be described as ' above average' in the UK, considerably better than some other zoos. There is plenty more to put right before worrying about the tigers/snow leopards, if they've made a mistake on the leopard enclosure I guess they will need to correct that though.

when the Leopard Enclosure was opened in 2003,a female Leopard got out through the top after climbing a tree and was darted but died, not long after that the director at that time left.

Sad news from Marwell today.

It is with great sadness that we have to announce the passing of Summer, our 14-year-old Brazilian Tapir.
Summer sustained an injury which lead to lameness. After recent vet investigations it was apparent that the injury was unlikely to ever fully heal and there was sadly nothing veterinary experts could do for her.
Taking her quality of life into full consideration, we made the extremely difficult decision to euthanise her on welfare grounds.
Summer was a wonderful character at the zoo and she will be greatly missed by all those who knew her, especially the animal keepers who cared for her.

Sad news , she was a lovely animal, with a placid nature generally.

Very sad. Now that just leaves Quito, summers daughter. I wonder what the future now holds for the brazillian tapirs at Marwell.. Will they either leave Quito alone, bring in a new breeding male, or go out of keeping tapirs once again.
Really hope they bring in a new male so marwell can breed tapirs again!

A Sulawesi Macaque has been born.
"What better present to give Satana for her 11th birthday than a... BABY! Our newest, tiniest Critically Endangered Sulawesi-crested macaque was born to birthday girl Satana and dad Douglas on February 8!"

Good to hear a second infant born in recent times to this small group.
