they could also move his half sister

She would however be another breeding female for N'Yuki, whether that will be productive is another matter.
Moving Bangui on makes more sense if a batchelor space could be found.

But only if Nyuki is either proved to be the father of this baby, or starts mating. Otherwise it might be better for them to keep Bangui on, at least for the next few years as he is integrated okay in the existing group. So finding out which is the baby's father is fairly important for them longerterm.

Howletts / Antwerp

Surprising news: According to "Gorillafan Cindy" on Facebook, MATADI (ex-Paignton, ex-Howletts) has arrived at the Antwerp Zoo today. And according to this article (in Dutch) they also want to introduce a new breeding female and rejoin the international breeding programme.

MATADI was supposed to head a new group at Howletts but apparently that didn't work out.

Affirmative as to all the above!

Interesting that male Matadi (ex Howletts) should come and head up the "new" old gorilla group at Antwerpen Zoo. Hope he does well there - no reason why not - and that finally Antwerpen Zoo may have a functional gorilla group with a realistic chance at offspring and a real family affair!!!!

I wonder why it did not work out at Howletts though … for Matadi?!

Some apparent problems with integrating females with him, but also his too close proximity to neighbouring silverback causing a stressful situation- I don't know which of these reasons became the predominant one in his being moved again.

Rumours have it that little Vana will move from Wilhelma-Kindergarden in Stuttgart to Dublin.
Any news where Tebogo will go to?

To Dublin as well. Two weeks ago keepers from Dublin were already in Stuttgart to get to know them. (Info courtesy of H. Vollmer.)

Very good idea. The two little ones will stay together and be able to support each other during the introductory phases. Also if the adoption goes successfully, the young male, as well, will benefit from growing up in a proper social group and he can then stay in it for some years to come.

thanx, Willard, for looking into it!

If Harry is okay with it, it's the best I could imagine for little Tebogo.
So, now Dublin is sort of a Wilhelma-dependance? :)
They have already Mayani and Kafi(Claudia), and with Vana and Tebogo moving, the Suabians are definitely the majority!

Cologne

A male named "Kiano" has been born to first time parents "Kissa" & 12 yo silverback "Kito".

Basel Zoo.

13 year old male 'Zungu' was euthanased on 11th March. 'Zungu' was a castrated male and also carried the same incurable fox tapeworm that the previous silverback male 'Kisoro' also suffered from. No further details available.

Lisbon Zoo.

Confirmaton by photo on Zoochat (see Lisbon gallery) that Anguka's baby(father Nasibu) born April 2015 is alive and well and still being raised by her. He is called 'Jahiri' and he represents the only descendant into this generation of the old ex Bristol female 'Delilah' who is still alive at Belfast Zoo, being her great grandson.

Any word as to who is the sire of the new baby at La Palmyre yet?

Nothing I can see so far. They've just posted some photos on the website as the baby will be two months old on Sunday. But it might still be difficult getting hair samples or whatever from him yet to do a DNA test? My suspicion is it may turn out that the young male is the father.

Antwerp - female, Kiki has had her right arm amputated below the elbow today. Unfortunately she suffered a seizure on 28th March in the enclosure next to male, Matadi and he grabbed her arm through the bars before severely biting her, leaving the arm broken. Despite initial surgery, complications have resulted in the arm sadly having to be amputated

How sad. The continuing saga of Matadi goes from bad to worse :(

I think Kiki should be moved to another situation- with either a very quiet old silverback, or no male at all. That's the reason she was sent to Antwerp in the first place.

IMO she definately should not be placed with Matadi when she recovers, as apart from the new disadvantage of her lost arm, with her epilepsy its clear she isn't a good subject for introduction to a young, boisterous male anyway. Matadi will get a bad name he doesn't deserve for incidents like this, if things aren't sorted out for him.:(

What bad news. Neither Kiki nor Matadi have had much luck in life so far. They both deserve a change in fortune.

Things do often get better with age. Silverback 'Yaounde' now the breeding male at Vallee de Singes (and father of new female Touni at Bristol) underwent about six moves around Europe in his earlier years- each time he could not settle and caused problems- he gradually acquired a reputation as a hopeless case. But after his final transfer to Vallee de Singes he settled down and became a model father and group leader. He isn't the only example either and it often proves the problem is not with the individual gorilla, but the situation it is put into. One of the overall problems is that males of twelve years or younger aren't ideal subjects to add to females, they are really not mature enough. Matadi isn't even in with these females yet, but I hope he is spared any of those problems.

For Kiki I think her medical condition means she needs a quiet/unstressful situation to live in- that is why she was sent to Antwerp as their previous male Kumba was very quiet. I think Nurnberg with the ancient male 'Fritz', or Munich with currently no male and a sort of 'nursery' group, might be better options for her now. There is talk they will receive another female at Antwerp for Matadi anyway.
