cheap books on Natural History

Stupidly I decided to look. £72 later (around $140 AUD) I received my three books and catalogue yesterday.

Damn you Chlidonias!!!
always a pleasure. Which books did you buy?

I just bought six books tonight for a grand total of $6 (at a second-hand book sale, not online). Three of them were old guidebooks, for Tiger Island, San Diego Zoo and London Zoo.

Stupidly I decided to look.

So did I! And I managed to spend over £80 on Ungulate taxonomy and Birding in Poland, not even in the sale!
Luckily, many years ago, my parents agreed to pay 50% for educational books. Boy was that a bad move on their part ;) if I ever manage to save up enough for half of HBW they will certainly regret that.

Why is it that whenever I click on this thread, I end up poorer?
I think I got quite a good deal on Birds of Kenya and Northern Tanzania though.

If you have to take just one bird book back to Africa you're better off with Stevenson & Fanshawe's "Birds of East Africa", IMO.

I actually have that book as an app which is quite good I think as it has sound recordings that you can play (and it of course means you don't have to carry a physical book).

I have the app too, but the book is better.

Do you guys think this is a good field guide for Australia? Birds of Australia: Ken Simpson, Nicolas Day, Peter Trusler: NHBS
It's £10 off and not too expensive so I thought it looked like quite a good deal.
there are four main field guides for Australia and all of them are very good. Every Australasian birder has a personal preference for one or other but they are all equally worth having (I have all four, but use the Slater one when I go to Australia just because it is the smallest).

There's a thread on Birdforum discussing the pros and cons of each (it's a sticky in the country sections).

Personally, I prefer Pizzey & Knight but as Chlidonias said, it just personal preference.
