I was wondering why so few Japanese zoo news is entering ZooChat.
Both in the forums as well as in the gallery only very few items are coming from Japan, a country with a lot of zoos and also a lot of people ( with camaras !!!!!! ;) ).
So please, people of Japan, let us know ( and see ) what is going on in your beautifull country !!!

ling ling dies

To start this threat myself :
At Ueno Zoo the giant panda Ling Ling died at an age of 22 years:(

there is a Japanese forum on Zoochat. You should post news there (e.g. on the thread for Ueno giant pandas....)

How many zoo animals are in Japanese zoos:

1. How many black rhinoceroses?
2. How many Indian rhinos?
3. Koalas?
4. White rhinos?
5. African bush elephants?
6. I know that in (Far-East) Asian region there are about 40 Western lowland gorillas.
7. Bonobos?
8. How many Sumatran tigers?
9. Are there any tree kangaroos in Japanese zoos?
10. I suppose there are a lot of orangutans in Japan?

Anybody to know something for some species?

There are somewhere around 50 koalas in Japan; the population is about half of what it was 20 years ago and most of them are aging quickly.

Japan is part of an international program for Sumatran tigers, so it probably has a sizable number of those. I think they are also part of an international program for Goodfellow's tree kangaroo.

Not sure how many African elephants are in Japan, but the vast majority of elephants in Japanese zoos are Asian.

I don't think there are any bonobos in Japanese zoos; however, the AZA in North America has sent a few bonobos to Kyoto University and possibly others for cognitive/behavioral research.

There is a website with data about all known gorillas in captivity, they probably have that info available.

Don't have any information to share about rhinos or orangutans.

Thank you a lot; I did not expected so high number of Koalas in Japan, that's more than US posess, is in it?

Maybe. There are 10 US zoos that have them right now: San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Rio Grande, Dallas, Riverbanks, Columbus, Cincinnati, Palm Beach, and Lowry Park. However, San Diego has about 20 just by itself, so perhaps the numbers here are equivalent to Japan's.

Edit: Kansas City will also be hosting two over the summer and fall this year. They are from San Diego.

Further Edit: Cleveland, not Cincinnati.

Cincinnati has not had koalas since the summer of 2006.
