When an ichth... an ictho... an icctolo... an icthlo...

When a bloke who was interested in fish became Director there were some who thought the Aquarium would be a priority.

Seriously, a good quality Aquarium would be a huge asset.
Which is just why he didn't do the Aquarium,as he didn't want people to say he was favouring his own interests!

The cheetahs that were in the old cassowary enclosures, have moved to what was previously the serval enclosure. I think they were last in that enclosure in 2002, before cheetah (temporarily) left the collection prior to the new enclosures being built in West Zoo.

Also worth mentioning is that the zoo library has been closed and the books packed away in order to make way for more office space. Apparently the library's contents will be stored until a new location is found.

Should probably also report that there are now four hanging parrots in the aviary within Realm of the Red Ape.

Just for interests sake I found this

Which collections did the aye ayes come from ? Male is age 8 & the female 30.

The male Raz/Razafindranriatsimaniry came from Bristol & The female Mamy came from ZSL London Zoo. I know the female went from Durrell to London to Chester but does anyone know where she was born?

She was wild-born; was first kept at Paris, went to Jersey in 1993, then to London in 1999.

Is that an underwater tunnel on the right just over the elephant bridge?
It could be anything. This was the original, fanciful and unrealistic "masterplan" than the zoo sank ridiculous amounts of money into, and they're about to do the same thing all over again.

I'm sorry to disagree but I think it's good how Chester are so ambitious as it's helped them become the leading Zoo they have become today, just look at the way they have impressively pulled Islands off I very much doubt any other UK Zoo could pull a project of that magnitude off let alone have the vision of that project.

I agree about Islands, but it was never part of the 'Masterplan'. I think that SMR is largely correct about that. It was wildly ambitious and completely dependent on sources of funding that dried up rapidly when recession struck. I can't help wondering what might have happened if the 'Heart of Africa' project had started and then got stalled and scaled back - it might have ended up as a total disaster. After all, Islands had its problems and it was much smaller in scale because of budget constraints.
The only part of the 'Masterplan' that has actually happened is the revamped Entrance complex. However, a lot of the research and analysis of the zoo's visitors, transport networks etc has informed the zoo's planning process and will provide a baseline for future research.

Just back from Chester after a long visit today, downloading photos (including aye-ayes *touches wood*) and have just finished a badly needed cold pilsener.
Quite a lot happening around the zoo, which may not be news to people on the walk-and-talk, but which I don't think has been reported here.
Old Tuan was on-show in the first netted enclosure in RotRA. The sun bear's enclosure has been divided by electric fencing; I saw the female on the dinosaur side. Dinosaur opening 26th May. Male chevrotain chasing female in Dragons in Danger and the big mountain chicken etc enclosure on the other side is being stripped down - there is a collapsible netted enclosure inside in which I saw one frog & several hermit crabs - more are probably in hiding. The outdoor dragon exhibit contained a wheelbarrow and signs of being gardened. There were no blackbuck on show on the Asian plains. The caecilian tank in the Tropical House was screened off. The old pelican and waterfowl aviary has now been completely renovated and some ducks are on show (most from Africa and the Near East) but it still looks relatively empty.

We have just come back from a weekend visit to Chester. I was mega impressed by how clever the place is. We are keen zoo and wildlife park visitors and thought it was one of the best places we have ever visited. I think the islands concept is fantastic and - as with any other fledgling project - it will grow into itself in time. Everything starts somewhere.

Visited today. Managed to photograph Tuatara ... and Sand Lizard! ;)

My Aye-Aye photographs were ... disappointing (as in solid black with a hint of red light) :D
