Zoos Divided By A Highway

The new tiger exhibit at the Cleveland Metroparks zoo, with the highway bridge looming overhead, made me think about zoos who are at least affected (if not defined) by their physical relationship with a highway. Not simply a matter of access to the zoo, but where a highway defines the zoo's lay-out.

Many zoos have highways at their boundaries but the zoo remains on one side. But in some cases the zoo has grown across the highway making for some interesting linkages and design issues.

At Cleveland there is a clear gateway created by passing under the elevated highway bridge.

Dallas Zoo: long broad tunnel that separates one side of the zoo from the other and is used for interpretive signs.

Toledo Zoo: a highway separates the two parts of the zoo.

More?

It's definitively not a great option, particularly if noices disturbs animals, and for aestetic reasons; the zoo may look nicer in more natural sorroundings.

I presume there are a few examples more. Here the ones that pop up to my mind:

- Zoo Duisburg in Germany ist divided even by a freeway.
- London Zoo, Great Britain, and Copenhagen Zoo, Danmark, are divided thru (big) roads (although not typical highways) and Zoo de Beauval, France, and Zoo d'Amnéville, France, more or less thru one or two small roads.

also interesting:
Zoo Basel (Switzerland) and Blijdoorp Zoo Rotterdam (Netherlands) are divided thru a railway, Bronx Zoo, Riverbanks Zoo & Botanical Garden, Bioparc Valencia (Spain), Zoo Berlin (Germany) and Zoo Leipzig (Germany) thru a creek/river/dry river bed.

London Zoo is divided into 3 sections because it is also intersected by the Grand Union Canal.
Chester Zoo is divided into 2 sections by Flag Lane, which is a bridleway, where the public may walk, ride horses or cycle.

Forgot the Canal at London Zoo. You're right. Thank you for the correction/specification.

HKZBG in HK. This small zoo is divided into the bird part and the mammal part by a road.

I seem to remember that I've seen a plan of Moscow Zoo and here also a road goes through the zoo. Don't know however if its a highway or another kind of road.

What about Ueno Zoo in Tokyo? Isn't it also divided by a road? (never been there in person)

These are the ones I have personally seen:
Dallas Zoo (USA) - tunnel
Columbus Zoo (USA) - overpass? (too long ago to remember well)
Langenberg Wildlife Park (SWITZERLAND) - pedestrian bridge
Zoo Zurich (SWITZERLAND) - tunnel or pedestrian crosswalk, depending which way you enter/exit Masaola Rainforest

Once St Louis Zoo (USA) develops its new section at the closed hospital they acquired, it will be across a freeway. One option being considered are large gondolas to cross over, which would certainly be unique.

Oh Jesus, I forgot Zurich and Langenberg. Shame on me!
But thank you @Arizona Docent to bring it up.

It's not a highway; just a regular road.

@zoomaniac: thanks for the acknowledgement...

Currumbin Sanctuary on the Gold Coat in Australia is divided by a road, with an underpass connecting the two halves. A small railway shares the underpass giving a quaint way of moving between then.

Of course Hong Kong Zoo with tunnels under the road connecting the mammal and bird sections.

If I am not mistaken you have personally seen Chester Zoo, too ;) it's only divided by a public footpath and bridleway rather than a major highway, but the point remains.

London Zoo has at least two roads running through it. I think there is a bridge to cross over one and a tunnel with cave paintings for the other. You can also see animals from the roads such as birds in aviaries, giraffes and african wild dogs because the are right next to one.

No London most definitely ONLY HAS ONE ROAD running through it does, however also have a canal that splits part of it off, which Gentle Lemur had already stated if you had bothered to read his post!

Duisburg Zoo

Just up-loaded some pictures of the Duisburg Zoo, among them a plan of the zoo where you can clearly see the highway dividing the zoo in 2 parts :

and also of the bridge connecting the 2 parts :

This bridge is so well planted that you hardly notice that you are on a bridge - only the sound of traffic can be heard but this you can also hear at the other parts of the zoo close to the highway.
