Can I really be the first to notice that the Islands website has confirmed not only tapirs, sun bears, and Indonesian passerines to be moving into Islands, but also everyone's favourite popcorn-scented furballs, binturongs!

What's next for Islands? | Islands news

EDIT: Also very pleased that the nostalgic 'Always Building' is still being invoked as Chester's ethos!

Im looking forward to the Sun Bear and Binturong mixed exhibit!

This is all more and more confirming my feeling that Islands is basically meant to be Burger's Rimba with Prague's Indonesia Pavilion dropped in the middle of it. ;)

(and the above is certainly not a criticism!)

One minor correction, the binturong is not "a brand new animal for the collection". I can remember when there were at least 3 binturong kept in the Small Mammal House and the Cat House :)

They might not be mixed all depends on which sub-species of Binturong they get!Given how small a Palawan is they could have a problem, but if they had Indo-chinese they would almost be as big as the Sun Bears themseleves!

So can I. I have photographs to prove it. :D

Speaking of photographs, does anyone have photos of the chimps Wilson, Rosie, Sarah, Sally and Patti? They are the only chimps I need help identifying.

So Because of the New Phase of Islands Will Have Binturongs, Sun Bear, Tapir and A New Aviary, does Islands already Have the Room/ Land for the New Buildings and Enclosures or Will The Islands Be Extended Outwards?

These will be in the undeveloped grassy area that the current path loops through between the tigers and the orangs/Monsoon Forest. The tapirs and aviary are broadly 'within' the loop of the path, the bears and binturongs between the path and the zoo boundary. :)

Ideal! Thanks MagpieGoose!

I think I should hopefully be able to ID most of them now when I go to Chester in August :)

I spent hours watching the pair in the Small Mammal House - great characters! The male was ... laidback. :)

Must confess I'm a bit concerned by this idea of mixing. Wasn't there a problem with the babirusa/ otter mixing?

I'm also concerned that the binturong will be tricky to see in such an enclosure.

There has been the odd problem with the Otter/Babirusa mixing but nothing that hasn't been able to be sorted with careful management!

It works at Arnhem and the enclosure sizes will be about the same, although if they get Palawan given just how small they are, there may be an issue seeing them!!!

I have records for binturong at Chester for the years 1939-1940; 1963; 1968-1990.

In 1974 a male was born but despite an attempt at hand-rearing it did not survive.

Looking forward to the next phase of islands! When are they looking to start construction on the new enclosures and have them completed? Also is there any way that they could expand monsoon forest to house new species in future?
