ZooChat Big Year 2016

Outside of our little contest, John Weigel, who I believe holds the Aussie big year record, just broke the American big year record - and still has over 5 months to go.

He is shortly followed by "the nude birder" Olaf Danielsson, so it remains interesting to see who of the two will have the most birds in the end.

On a worldwide scale Arjan Dwarshuis has seen his 4000th bird of the year and he is travelling in the new world since 2 weeks. When comparing with the current record holder Noah (who saw just over 6000 species), Arjan has seen more species in the old world (which Arjan will maybe only return to in December) in less time until now.

I've seen 52 species this year.... :D

While organising my sightings from today, I realised the Western Corellas that I saw were new for the year too. :)

540) Western Corella

It's been a slow few weeks for new stuff despite regular birding, however I managed quite a few new species from a trip today:

541) Australian Hobby
542) Red-winged Fairy-wren
543) White-breasted Robin
544) Baudin's Black Cockatoo
545) Inland Thornbill
546) Dusky Woodswallow

Missed a couple of birds and one mammal that I was hoping for, but still rather pleased with that total! Also got a trip lined up for tomorrow which should add a few more birds.

Another rather successful day, today in Yanchep National Park, though sadly I missed both Southern Emu-wren and White-winged Fairy-wren that I was really hoping for, as well as a few other things that I think I would have found if I had longer there.

547) Whistling Kite
548) Tawny-crowned Honeyeater
549) Black-faced Woodswallow
550) Yellow-throated Miner
551) Jacky Winter
552) Black-shouldered Kite

Also got my first WA Fan-tailed Cuckoo as well as over 100 Carnaby's Cockatoos.

Spent yesterday basking in the sun at Gibraltar Point - earned a couple of new birds and a nice selection box of invertebrates:

Birds:
325. Sandwich Tern - Thalasseus sandvicensis
326. Eurasian Spoonbill - Platalea leucorodia

Invertebrates (three butterflies, a damselfly, a crab, and a wasp):
80. Essex Skipper - Thymelicus lineola
81. Banded Demoiselle - Calopteryx splendens
82. Green Shore Crab - Carcinus maenas
83. Small Skipper - Thymelicus sylvestris
84. Red-banded Sand Wasp - Ammophila sabulosa
85. Gatekeeper - Puronia tithonus

UK bird total is now on 188 - edging my way towards 200!

Another birding trip today,

553) Australasian Pipit
554) Western Rosella (I had been madly searching for this species ever since my mum saw one in our garden while I was at AQWA so I'm so pleased that I found it in the end!)

Edit: The above should actually be #555 - see below.

you've miscounted LaughingDove: 540 was western corella and 541 was pied stilt, but then in post #664 you went from 540 to 541 again (counting Australian hobby as 541 instead of 542). So you should be on 555 now.

Oh yes, you're absolutely right. I just missed off writing the stilt on my yearlist note since I wasn't actually out birding when I saw it and I posted in this thread before I got back and had a chance to write it in the note (therefore totally forgetting about it).

Finally, just as I was about to give up on my sunrise bird walks in the bush around my accommodation because I wasn't seeing anything unusual at all, I found the species I wanted most!

556) Red-eared Firetail
