Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo news 2016 #2

Visited yesterday. It was a dry overcast warm day but a little windy. I was disappointed the gibbons were all looking at the islands out of their hatches but not one ventured out.

On a much happier note I did at last see the pair of Yellow Throated Martens, very impressed.

The Bonobos were all out in a big group (counted 10 adults and one juvenile) and the Chimps in the square house were really kicking off, lots of screaming, teeth and chasing. The keeper staff looked a little alarmed at the intensity and duration.

Not too busy considering the school holidays have started.

A bit confused by this item- I presume this is the same baby I saw in mid May, but it already seemed quite active by then. They say its three months old now, which seems late for a press release too. Also, another report(BBC) mentions it being in a group with four others whereas there are only the adult trio- unless this is a second baby- but then it could not be the first there for 30 odd years. There is another older Diana female in the Zoo but it lives with something else- or it did in May.

They say it hasn't been sexed yet- I thought it was female.

Possibly the other release was confused, simply knowing there were 4 on show; the 4th lives with Guenon. I thought it seemed a bit late for a press release too as it looks about the same age as the L'Hoests Monkey.

I am sure this is the same baby that I saw, now older and more colourful and active. But the total of five given for Twycross is still confusing. It is also a bit odd that on their Facebook there is a piece of video from someone of this baby which they have shared, dated July18th, yet there are no comments about it from the zoo. Then this press announcement later. Again, the baby looks like a female to me.

Here's a pic I put in the gallery back in May. I'm sure it's the same baby too, but they have simply timed the press release for the holidays. The clips reflect the antics I witnessed on my last visit at the start of July. As well as climbing all over the two female adults, whenever the baby got too close to the male, the ladies would charge over to warn him off :D So, there are 4 in that enclosure and a single "older female" in with some Guenon.

A good photo- it also demonstrates pretty well its a female baby I think. I imagine what's happened is simply an error in the reporting, and that its in a group of four(no 'others').

Interesting and encouraging that Twycross have established new trios of both De Brazza and Diana monkeys in the last few years, resulting in first breedings for many years, plus the pair or trio(?) of L'Hoest's are quite recent too. Things are certainly looking up on the Guenon collection-front management-wise. :)

Gibbon Forest.

On their Facebook there's also a short video of just one Gibbon using the outdoor space properly- it looks terrific swinging around. But is this still the exception- are the others mainly not going outside yet on a daily basis? Post 238 on this thread indicates that may still be the case, but earlier posts from three weeks ago show at least some of them have been outside. An update would be useful..

One of the two chimps with alopecia, Mongo, has sadly and suddenly passed away. No clear reason as to why mentioned :(

This leaves 8.11 at the zoo (Jambo, Flynn, Jomar, Kibali, Coco, Noddy, Rosie, Tojo, Lottie, Josie, Victoria, Genet and Tuli in the big group, and Samantha, William, Holly, Peter, Tommy and Danny in the small group).

Visiting last week, I saw a few tentative gibbons peering out, and two siamang/ making full use of the outdoor area. I thought the house was very nice - even if the glass of the windows already looks a bit grubby - but the islands are a little small and, for the moment, rather bare (although obviously a vast improvement on that which they replace).

Poor Mongo, unexpectedly passed away yesterday!

I just read on the Facebook page of Twycross zoo, that Mongo passed away yesterday. What a sad moment! I wonder what happened.

SHAMELESS SELF-ADVERTISING ALERT

Watch out for the BBC News report on Mongo's death; my photos of him will be used! :)

It happened when he was anaesthetised for an examination of his large throat sac, we commented how big it had got last time we saw him.

Yet another death of an Ape related to anaesthesia.:( I'm not suggesting that examination of his throat sac wasn't a necessary procedure, it probably was, but I shudder at how often Apes still seem to be 'put under' for 'routine health checks' or apparently minor procedures.
