Project Polar needs to be finished

any updates??

No, definite need I guess. They already have 2 or 3 good exhibits for single sex group. What rationale for any hurry.

Project savannah reno and expansion seems far more important for the meantime. It brings in new species and makes for a vastly improved savannah experience.

I do share criticism of some that the YWP does really not have much in terms of non mammals … (but that will not likely change sadly).

I would say the rationale for the hurry is because it was/is their flagship project. Also people have to walk through a building site every time you visit. I feel that enclosure 2 was rushed and doesn't provide the same standard as the first.

They need to put their energy into finishing this project before they begin any other

I was thinking about this and I thought that one of the enclosures would look quite cool themed as a building site like it is now, it would show that polar bears are having to live closer to humans due to the environmental impacts. I'm sure it could never be done though due to safety and it not looking like their natural environment.

Recent visit

We visited YWP yesterday and for those who have not visited recently |I| can confirm that the new path through East Africa reserve is open and the pasture to the south is occupied by 2 Grevys zebra (Ohura & Ellen), Lechwe, Common Eland, 3 x Ostrich (Cuthbert, Joan & Ethel) and Elvis the Emu!
The giraffe are not present as they are somewhat timid coming through the new 'airlock' system of gates and are still presently in their original enclosure, but are hoped to be into the larger reserve very soon.
The leopards are now only really visible from the end with the viewing wondow and leopard heights tower, but seem to be enjoying 'stalking' the occupants of the next paddock....lol.
The rhino are not expected until towards the end of the year due to some beaurocracy issues it appears so the build on the other section has slowed as a result.
All in all the new walk through area is looking good and gives a new aspect to the park which is constantly evolving.
For those interested the original male Chapmans zebra are due to be moved to other parks at some point in the future and are not expected to be reintegrated into YWP!

Has worked continued at Project Polar????

Anyone going soon to check it out??? Photos?
It looks as though work has now started in the enclosure adjacent to the first one with an access point being created from the pathat the back for construction vehicles.

I went today and can't say I noticed any significant progress in Project Polar. However, Victor and Pixel have been separated from Nobby and Nissan for the time being because of the poor old fella becoming isolated.

Nissan was kept inside yesterday because he 'had an upset tummy' according to staff member.
The work was starting at the back of the enclosure next to the entrance to Project Polar near the American Viva enclosure.

All 4 were out on Sunday, although not particularly active after I arrived.

I did think there was something different about that corner, but wasn't sure; I keep looking for stoats/weasels as I walk past it.

There was a facebook video from yesterday showing the Giraffes venturing out into the new enclosure.:D
I think the Rhino movement has been deliberately delayed due to the weather. They don't want to add to the stress of moving them combined with hot weather.
Pity about the Chapmans zebras being relocated but they were always an odd bunch, with one of the males seaming to think it was an Eland most of the time, and the others never really seeming to get along with each other.Looking forward to seeing the Grevy's.
I think they will go full steam ahead to finish the 2 remaining Project polar exhibits now the majority of the rescaping is finished in African plains. I hope they retain the "mound" in the almost finished enclosure and build it back up further after 18 months of erosion into the shallow pool area close to the fence line. It has the makings of some great photo opportunities with 1 or 2 bears on top of the mound.:)

Any updated pics of project polar construction? Thanks
Suspect you may have to wait sometime for it to be finished,if the rumours I am hearing are true they have a problem with a mains gas pipe which is if the rumours are true causing a bit of concern,as it runs right through the un-finished exhibits!

Oh no. Knew about the gas pipe problems before but thought had been resolved. When has this new problem occurred??

I never said it was a new problem!!!

I'm afraid it's a problem that without a great deal of work, disruption and most importantly money that's never going to go away. It's obviously why they have tried to start expansion away from the pipe with the paddock and play area.

I'm worried that this could be the one thing that will hold this collection back and that is a shame because they are doing a great job and right on my doorstep.

would still like to see some updated photos to see if construction has re-started

Suspect you will have a very long wait for it to be finished, highly doubt it will be finished this year,I would say late next year at the very earliest before its any where near finished!
